My problem is an intermittent engine miss on a 2000 Sonata 2.0 litre petrol 16V 4 cylinders manual transmission. The miss is just a sudden jerk/thud in the engine. At times the engine cuts out totally. But you can start the engine up immediately after, without a CEL.
It has occurred during normal highway cruising and during acceleration. It has also gone for extended periods of time without happening. It differs from an ignition miss in that it may happen like once - all cylinders quite for one brief cycle and then resume as if nothing happens.
It has been my experience with ignition problems that they usually act like just one cylinder quits firing while the others continues, this isn't the case.
This is more like someone switches the key off and back on suddenly

I have left the car into garage number of times no faults are recorded on the ecm.
I have had plugs and leads changed also have changed the fuel relay. I have had the crank angle sensor or its connector checked for deformation or loose fit no apparent problems. Also the vent on the fuel tank has being adjusted
And the problem still happens with full tank (thinking it might have being a lose piece of plastic in tank.)

Still no closer a bit hesitant to go back to garage.

hiya,

i have got the same problem with the wife's 1600 lantra. i was wondering if, because its happening on different models, it may be the immobiliser breaking up as i used to have the same prob on my old cavalier? am going to take her car into garage tomorrow, if i find the cause i'll let you all know.

Terry
p.s lots of usa cars have the same prob as well

The only way to check this is through a Hi Scan unit. It might be a crank sensor. Keep only one key on your keyring as the spare can sometimes interfere with the one in the barrel if its attached tonthe same k.ring

I think these problems are either the Crankshaft Sensor or the Throttle Position Sensor

problem solved
hi there
I had the same problem engine was dificult to start when hot, used to cut off, when driving or idleling, sometimes it would not start for 20 minutes after turning off.
so last summer i called the AA the guy had a look around and checked a few things, and said it could be the crankshaft sensor, then i took the car to hyundai and i asked them to connect to the computer, but it did not show a thing, but the problem did not come in that day and the car always started first time so they could not find, they said it could be immobilizer.
3 weeks a go i done a service and changed all filters, fuel filter as well, engine flashed etc, and i cleaned the crankshaft sensor, after all that the car got better, but still hard to start most of the time.
after many months i decided to do what the AA man said and BINGO it was the crankshaft sensor £30
and its easy to change 10 mm spanner, and just connect the wire conector it is next to the gear box, : botton of engine
good luck.
