My wife has a 2001 Elantra w/90k miles and the light, ""malfunction indicator light"" has reared its ugly head. Neither of us are trusating souls of dealerships as we have had work performed that was not required. We are constantly concerned of service departments "loading up" back-end profits with items that may not be necessary.

Enough of the speech: Has anyone had this light come and stay on and, if so, can you explain what it relates to?

Any help appreciated,

-Miles®™

Your mileage, is right at the point (90,000km/60,000 miles) when the timing belt is to be changed. It is pretty pricey replacing this, but if it isnt done, problems will certainly escalate and a motor job may be in the future.
Why not take the car someplace and have the code read, which is causing the indiciator light. Knowing the code will possibly point out the problem

suagen is right, this engine check light has come on as a result of an engine malfunction, the only way to check this out for the fault is to take ot to a dealer. just ask them to read the code and tell you what the fault is and then take it from there or come back here for advice
