I drive a 1998 Hyundai Elantra

I was on cardomain.com and this guy has a 2001 Hyundai Elantra and he painted the seats and carpet with Fabric paint.

Its like spray paint but for fabric and vinal. I would love to change the color of my interior. Its beige now and i want it black or dark grey. Has anyone used this stuff to see if it actually works?

Im worried that if i do spray it on, it will eventually rub off with all the moving around that getting in and out of the car causes.

Also,
Is there a way that I would be able to take the back bench seat out of my elantra and replace it with 2 bucket seats? I've seen a few people do this and i would love to have those in the back rather then the bench seat. So if theres any way possible, let me know.

Thanks! :)

Hi :57: ,

Can't say I've ever heard of fabric paint and am a bit dubious about the long term staying power  .

I can understand the desire for change, but I'm wondering if you might not be better served by having the interior professionally retrimmed or alternatively, finding a wreck with an intact interior in the right colourway.

I daresay you would be able to change the rear seats with appropriately engineered seat frames and perhaps aftermarket seats. I have seen it done on a wagon which doesn't affect the load carrying ability as much as what you are contemplating (I'm assuming you have a sedan). Personally, I find my boot a tad small on occasions and utilise the fold downablility(?) of the rear seat squabs.

Consider also the possibility of having your rear seats rebolstered to look more bucket like.

Check with a local motor trimmer. You might be able to negotiate a good deal.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Andrew B) .

I agree w/trakka on going to a professional for the interior. I really never tried fabic paint so I really can't say much about it. If you do go that route I would test it out on a similar fabric b4 spraying the whole interior.

Hey man, yes there is a fabric vinyl paint. It will stay a good while permitted you let it fry, Also for plastics in the car use Duplicolor Car Truck and SUV paint. Make sure after removaol of plastic use dish ditergiant and clean it repediatly. Then use laquer thinner to clean the chemicals used on it out. Such as Armor All. Paint will bubble off if its oily.

I have used the vinyl/fabric paint. You can buy it at autozone here.

Here's what I've done:

(My ceiling was light-tan as well, along with the visors. My dash was all light-gray.)

I used black and blue of that spray paint.
It turned out really well on everything, except the seats. I painted the bottom front edge first, just to see how it would turn out. It made the seat really rough. I recommend testing a hidden area of the surface you want to paint first.

If you need the name of it, let me know. I have some in the garage that I can go look at and take a picture of, if you need me to.

the trick to getting the seats to not feel rough is very light coats and use a nylon brush to actaully brush the seats as you are applying the paint..the roughness is from large quantities of the paint drying together ....it will not be completely soft like it was from the dealer but you can get it pretty darn close and after it wears alittle it will soften up too...when dying your plastic pieces wash them with detergent and use a plastic prep spray and adhesion promoter before applying the dye/paint...you can get permant results that will look like they came from the dealership ....

i have dyed many parts and done complete color changes and custom colors and have had great results ...

if you want just a quick color change for the seats just get some seat covers..that way if and when you goto sell the car you can return it to stock like conditions....
