What exactly does a fuel filter do? I have not had mine replaced on my car and it was recommended at 52,500 miles and i am at 58,100. I finally found my owners manual and I was wondering if that could cause my car to have problems accelerating?? The check oil light keeps coming off and on. The other day I removed the oil cap and the light went off. Could that be it? Any suggestions would be great. I am sure I seem to be on the clueless side, but I am really just trying to keep my 2001 Elantra for atleast 4 more years.

Thanks in advance

a fuel filter filters the petrol as petrol is dirty, they are quite easy to change so if your pretty handy with tools or got someone handy you can do it yourself propably wont hurt the car if it has not been done recently. If you have a clouged petrol filter there can be a lose of power etc and starting etc.

you disconnect power to the petrol pump then start it up to relieve petrol to the fuel line. In my car which was a coupe 2000 model the connection was under my back seat.

undo the bolts to the fuel filter then put the new one in then attach the pump back and check for leaks.

obvious make sure there is enough oil in car if all ok then check the sensor associated with oil.
