I have a 2008 Santa Fe with the basic stereo, no NAV/GPS. I would like to add a little bit more bass to the stereo without adding a subwoofer or replacing the head unit. Any suggestion on replacement speakers for the doors? I think the speaker size is 6 1/2" to 6 3/4", right? Would a component system be a better choice or just a straight speaker swap with leaving the current tweeters in? And which brands or specs would be good?

Just so we're clear -- BASIC basic? Is there a silver amp under the passenger seat or no? Center speaker in the dash? Makes a difference as to whether a simple speaker swap is likely to buy you anything.

Thanks for the reply, yes, it is the basic basic stereo, no amp and no center speaker, just the four speakers in the doors and the tweeters in the front doors.

As the well known science fiction writer once said - "There ain't no such thing as a free lunch" (TANSTAAFL). The existing door speakers are reasonably high compliance. They're giving you pretty much what you're delivering from the amplifier. More "oomph" on the bottom end is going to require more amp before changing speakers is going to do you any good - so it becomes a swap of both. I'll leave it to the guys here who have made the swap to provide their preferences, but understand that the vast majority have been swapping in various Asian combo video/nav units (which I can't honestly recommend except for looks - at least for the GPS part).

Canderson is right. I have the same set up as you and the speakers are the last thing you want to change. It's easier to change the head unit (even if doing it yourself) or adding a BOSS low profile powered sub under the Px seat. I did the latter and it was adequate - just barely. Anything else you need more power. There is a nice aftermarket replacement unit that looks very OEM. I would have gone this route if I didn't lose the XM radio. Do a search for it and I am sure you'll find it here.

I'll agree as well. Without an amp pushing the door speakers, you're not going to get much more out of them. I have the watt infinity system (with amp), so I simply swapped the head unit, and upped the eq a bit. This made a world of difference. Without the amp I'd be in the same boat looking to install one for my door speakers.

As for an aftermarket sub I agree with that as well. This isn't a tiny hatchback or truck. The vehicle is big and requires quite a bit of power to make a sub sound good. I'd say 250 real watts minimum, which is what I was running for several months.

I decided to keep the door speakers and I bought a 400w amp and a single 10" subwoofer to round out the stereo. Due to work and weekend plans coming up, I am not getting it installed until Feb 6th. The guy told me he could mount the amp and the sub in the large storage area in the back of the vehicle and save me some space to use in there for real storage if needed.

It should definitely be doable. The whole storage bin can be removed as well. I'd imagine they will punch a hole through the back or side for wires.

I got it installed over last weekend and they did a good job. Both the amp and the sub are mounted in the rear storage and I have plenty of space for other stuff in their as well. Sounds really good also. I bought a 400w amp but they put in a 600w amp, not that I am complaining or anything. I did have a two hour delay from my appt to when they started work, maybe they felt bad? But like I said, I am not complaining.
