How do I confirm that my timing is correct? I replaced the head gasket, made sure the # 1 piston was at top dead center and lined up the hole in the timing belt sproket with the notch on the cylinder head. But the timing seems off. Any help?

To confirm it you put the bottom pulley to TDC... the timing marks should be plainly visible on the plastic timing belt cover. Remove the top timing belt cover... It should be pretty easy to do. Confirm that the OHC sprockets are lined up while bottom pulley is on TDC.

If it's not that, then maybe you have an intake leak on one of the fuel injectors or someplace.

So what was wrong with the old head? Did you overheat the thing? Doesn't take much to warp them.

Overheated. Daughter busted radiator hose, replaced hose but no antifreeze and it blew the gasket. I had it resurfaced to be safe. Otherwise it ran great before that.
