I bought a Hyundai i30 1.6CRDi Estate a year ago and my actual* economy has averaged 50MPG over 20,000 miles. In the snowy weather we had in the UK the economy dropped to 38MPG on one fill up. I drive mainly on the motorways and cruise at 70MPH if conditions allow. The highest economy I've had from one fill up was an indicated 60MPG, but that required driving at less then 60 MPH over long distances. (To put this into context, I also have a petrol 2.0i VW Corrado and that regularly gives 45MPG, and I once achieved 53MPG with the equivalent journeys).
I bought my i30 principally for the economy and value for money. The 1.6CRDi now has a 6 speed box as standard, but when I bought mine I only got 5 gears. Top gear isn't long enough to get the best economy, and the extra cog has brought down the VED by a group on most of the i30 models.
* my i30 over-reads by 8%, so speed, economy and distance are all inaccurate. Hence indicated economy is 54MPG when actually its only doing 50MPG. This is because the 15" wheels in the UK are only fitted with 185 x 65 tyres, with a slightly smaller rolling circumference than models with the larger wheels. I plan to change for 195s when my first set need replacing.
