My 2002 Hyandai Sante Fee will not start up everytime I put gas in it. The mechanics cannot find the problem. I had to change my starter two times in 6 months because I keep flooding the starter to start it up. Does anyone know what this might be?

I have the exact same problem- ever since mid October (2004 6 cyl). My mechanic couldn't find a problem either, he said there was no codes coming up on the computer. However, there is a bulletin sent out by Hyundai warning of a potential problem with the purge valves sticking open. Mine wasn't stuck open, but perhaps the problem is intermittent. I'm taking mine in tomorrow and having the valve replaced. I'll let you know if that helped.

There is a posting below regarding the same issue, but I've had regular maintance and the belt was replaced at 100,000 kms. (i'm now at 170,000).

I assume the failed purge valve doesn't shut and vents liquid gasoline directly into the intake manifold as opposed to gasoline vapors like it's supposed to? This would foul the sparkplugs and give a no-start situation.

I replaced my purge valve and it starts at the gas station again. I've had 2 fill ups with no problems now.

I'm finding it is running a little sluggishly though, so maybe the plugs were fouled, as suggested in another post. Could just be my imagination, too.

I'm having this problem too. It just started about two weeks ago. Every time I fill the tank at the gas station it won't restart until multiple attempts later and I have to pump the gas pedal to get it started and then for about 30 seconds to keep it running. Then it is fine. Later starts are no problem. This is only after I fill the tank. Does this still sound like the purge valve? Thanks for any suggestions!

Yes, that's purge valve.

Not that I'm adding much here, but that is definitely a symptom of a failed/stuck purge valve. Get it replaced.

You can pull a plug and look at it. Carbon fouling from too rich a mixture would make it sluggish.
