[font="Arial"][/font]For my 2003 Elantra: If I replace the CR2032 battery in my keyless entry fob, does that somehow cancel the code, which would then require me to pay a Hyundai dealer to reset it? Or do the fobs each have their own unique unchangeable code which is saved by my Elantra's ETACS module, meaning I could change the fob battery and still have it operate correctly?

The local Hyundai dealer wants $64 to set a fob for my car (!) so it would be nice to know before making an appointment.

We might just change the battery in one of them as an experiment.

My User Manual says nothing about the retention life of the code, so I would guess that nothing is lost during the changeover (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif)

But do please try the experiment and let us know

You must always change the battery within about twenty to thirty seconds or the fob will lose it's program code!!!

Okay, I replaced the battery and it works fine. Had the fob open with the old battery out for about a full minute before putting it back together. I'll bet each transmitter is made with its own unique code which is then saved in the ETACS module during the transmitter code saving procedure.

I bought this car in Jan 2004 from a rental agency who, at first, claimed this car didn't have keyless entry. So I checked into it, found this Elantra was indeed keyless entry-capable and ordered a new fob/transmitter for $124. It cost another $40 for the dealer to set the code. I remember the service guy asking if I had an additional fob so they could do it at the same time but I said no.

Two weeks later, a package arrived in the mail from the place where I bought this car. It contained the original keyless entry fob, attached to a spare key, with a note saying, "We found the original key & fob for your car. Sorry!", but it no longer worked as its code was erased during the recent code saving procedure. I've just never needed a second fob and don't want to pay $64 for code saving since now I have a fresh battery and the codes are intact.

...and if I do lose my fob, I already have the exact replacement. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
