I have read a few walkthroughs for replacing the clutch. I have gotten to the point of putting the transmission back on and the walkthroughs say it should slip right back into place. It is lined up and goes on some but doesn't just slide into place.

Is there something I am missing?

What did you do with the throwout bearing? Did you snap it on the pressure plate on the ground? Or did you put it on the forks and bring the trans up and snap it on that way?

Are you sure you got the clutch disk centered before you tightened it up?

Well there's a whole lot of reasons why it might not slide back in. Usually it's something stupid. I have spent hours trying to slide in transmissions, other times they go right in. The short answer is "don't give up"... it will go in. You just didn't figure out the problem yet.

Maybe if you provide more detail, I could be of help. Like explain exactly the condition. How close is it to going in?
Are you sure you did the throwout bearing right? Did you try to put an axle in the hole and turn the trans a little? What gear did you leave the shifter in? Did you play with the shifter settings? Did something stupid fall down and wedge in between the engine and the trans, etc...

Well, one thing that has been a nuisance is the CV shaft on the other side which at this point is where it should be in the transmission. We can get it on to where it will sit in there on its own but still has another 1.5" to go on the rest of the way.

The throwout bearing is on the transmission with the clips facing towards engine. We have tried putting it in gear and neutral.

And put an axle in which hole?

1 1/2 inch is pretty far. I'd say the splines are not engaging on the main shaft. Try turning the trans by inserting an axle temporarily in the out put flange and turn the shaft a little.

ok. I got it within about a 1/2 inch now. It seems like the shaft is wedged into the disc but it just won't go that extra bit.

1/2 inch huh? Did you get the alignment pin lined up on the edge of the case. There's a 1/2 inch stud sticking out that get's inserted into the bell housing.

If I am thinking of the same thing, yes. There is one somewhat close to the bolts that are taken off around the housing? I try to wedge it into place and line it up into that hole with the stud.

you know they say never to use the bellhousing to engine bolts as a way to join the two back together but if I was sure everything was aligned? Who's to stop me. A lot of times it takes a little extra ummph to get on there but before you do make sure there is nothing caught between the two.

That's what I am afraid of. I have started to just drop kick the **** thing and thought better of it. But I may try giving it some extra push.
