I have a 2001 Accent. And i beleive it is haunted. Atleast the wiring is for that matter. The dash lights have always blinked on and off until the car warmed up, then they would stay on. After replacing the stereo with an aftermarket deck, i lost all dash lights and control stick lights. Also my Left tail light will not turn off, and my right one seems to be blown. I checked the fuse, and the fuse was blown in the right hand light. When i replaced it and turned the lights on, it blew again. It keeps blowing fuses. Could the relay be the issue? I am dumbfounded, and the car isnt worth brining to a mechanics shop.
note: brake/turn signal and hazard lights work fine

QUOTE (rsquared @ Nov 14 2009, 01:04 AM) There's diodes in the power distribution box? I thought it was fuses & relays. They're two little black diodes. They look like fuses with white arrows on them. See the picture I attached. They're circled in red. This was taken from my 2000 1.5L. but most vehicles have them (Elantra, Sonata etc.)

I'm familiar with the diodes being in the alternator not the PDB. Thanks. I missed that. (IMG: style_emoticons/default/liebe011.gif)

Strange but true, my 01 Accent does similar things. Intermittent dash lights, the fuse for signals blows often, and the b/u lights work intermittently (when the fuse isn't blown).
I'm tracking shorts, but this could take a while. If you find a place that's prone to wire harness stress or wear, please post it.

When diodes fail, you generally don't get intermittent results such as flickering lights, but a failed diode could "short to ground", so depending on how they're included in the circuit, you could have fuses "blow" in that circuit. I think you need a multi-meter & some wiring diagrams to be able to do some "serious" trouble shooting, but to start with, I'm adding some pictures that might prove to be helpful for your trouble shooting: - Picture of all the Accent Diode locations - there are several.
- 2 pictures of all the ground locations - bad grounds are often the problem for intermittent or dead circuits.
Diodes: (IMG: http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd1/Alfons_photos/Hyundai%20Info/HyundaiAccentDiodes.jpg) Grounds: (IMG: http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd1/Alfons_photos/Hyundai%20Info/HyundaiAccentGrounds-1.jpg) (IMG: http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd1/Alfons_photos/Hyundai%20Info/HyundaiAccentGrounds-2.jpg) You can get a lot of info, including schematics, from the Hyundai Service site.

QUOTE (sudsy69 @ Nov 13 2009, 01:00 PM) Check the two diodes in the underhood fuse box. One of them is sure to be blown. I have a friend with a similar problem, no instrument panel lights and no brake lights (running lights are fine, just nothing happening when she hits the brake pedal). How do you test if the diode is blown? I've never pulled one out so I don't know what to look for. or is it as simple as like a blown resistor, black char and all that?

If you plan on performing your own trouble shooting and repairs, a multimeter is a really good investment . Here's some good information on multimeters, from selecting one to testing diodes. Testing diodes is described for analogue and digital multimeters at the bottom of the page.

I love my multimeter....picked it up from Canadian Tire for $15 on sale from $99 a few years back when I started modifying!! thanks brother, I'll have a read.
