well I'm doing an all around brake job on the tiburon that i got real cheap. it needed a few things before it could even be inspected and brakes were definitely a part of that. while doing the driver side front brakes..i noticed this on the axle. I don't know the technical name for it but i know the purpose of it.
Few questions..can it be easily replaced with just taking out a few bolts..etc. and is it even worth replacing..is it something the inspector will fail me for?
If i need to replace is can you please link me to a good site to get one. Thanks so much
Heres a pic of what i'm talking a about:
http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/4906/hyundaiproblem.jpgThat is the axle boot. Its a common thing that they tear. When they do, dirt gets in the assembly and your cv joints will begin to click druing turns. They can be rebuilt or replaced...checl out raxles.com. Its usually a more of a pain in the **** to replace the boot with a kit so I just usually replace them, especially if they are making noise. Its not to hard to get them out usually. You need a large socket to fit the axle nut and a huge breaker bar or air gun. The main problem you run into is the axle gets rusted and seized in the hub assembly. At that point you need a torch, or cut the axle and buy a whole new hub.The axle will be around 100 bucks and hubs range from 75 to 150. Expect to pay out your **** if you take it to a mechanic as they will **** around trying to seperate the axle from the hub to rake in some labor hours. Its really not a bad job as long as you prepar fpr the worst.
Oh and as for inspection, it could go either way depending on your states requirements. I have passed here in ny with a torn boot. It really depends on the severity of the damage and the discretion of the inspector.
