I've noticed a few times that when I'm coming over a speed bump, or off a kerb, and I'm braking at the time, the pedal will feel like it's hitting something when I come off the bump. It's almost as if something in the braking system is scraping against the ground; the pedal will go hard for a half-second, and there's a distinct scrape/thunk noise from the underside of the car.

It's only got 2500 miles on it, surely the brakes aren't failing already?

Not heard of anything like that before. If it's a possible brake fault I wouldn't hang about, get back to your dealer sap and have it checked out.

You shouldn't brake going over a seped bump as this compresses the shock absorber so the shock absorber is already compressed when you hit the speed bump reducing the available travel, ideally you should brake prior to hitting the speed bump and gently accelerate over.

The ABS brakes will not help you slow down any quicker than normal brakes, ABS will only help you keep your steering and stop skiding, in snow you will not stop much Quicker with ABS, you brake pedal will go hard and push your foot upward, you will hear a noise from the ABS system as well.
When you brake as you come off the bump, your one wheel will lock up, the ABS will come in to stop you, the padal will vibrate and make a noise, also go hard as the ABS takes control.

Its just the ABS.

I get it every now and then if I hit a pothole whilst breaking.

Very odd the first time, thought I had broken something. Used to it now.

I have had this happen to me off and on over the last year and a half. It happened again today so i decided to do some research. it actually is very disconcerting and i don't think it's "normal." i wasn't going over any large hole or bump when it happened either, just a little glitch in the road....and then that awful sort of ball bearings bouncing under the brake pedal feeling coupled with the ugliest grating noise. it sucks because these cars are so new. when i describe it to anyone i can the "yeah right" look.

again, it hasn't caused any mechanical issues, as in major failure. but it is very disconcerting, scary when it happens, and....would be nice to have an explanation or remedy for repair. it is very hard to reproduce however. if it happens, and then you try and repeat it, not likely to happen.

would love to be updated if anyone has anything to add.

The ABS system is just doing what it is supposed to do.

As others have already said, no problem just the ABS working.

With all the snow and ice recently the ABS kicked for the first time on our i10 and it was a bit
of a shock not knowing what to expect when the brake peddle vibrated and hearing the strange grating noise.

Nothing to worry about.
