OK, I got everything apart, took the head and had it machined, ordered all my gaskets and replacement items and am now ready to reassemble. I have some concerns
1. How do I make sure I have my # 1 piston at top dead center (and which one is # 1)?
2. How do I know when to put my cam at so it matches up with the pistons?
3. If this is off any will it effect the performance or could it damage the valves?

Remember I am a novice at this (virgin if you will). Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

#1 cyl. is the far right cyl (pass side), TDC is when the piston is all the way at the top. There is a mark on the crankshaft gear that will line up with a mark on the engine. Line the small hole in the cam gear up with the red line or indentation in the cap right behind the gear.

Dear Duane,

Duh, we forgot to tell you also....either install the head with the camshafts off, or make sure that the camshafts are also properly aligned for #1 at the top of the compression stroke.

I would prefer to not remove the camshaft. How do I tell when it is properly aligned with the compression stroke with the # 1 piston?
