If you follow the on-board computer, you will NEVER run out of gas. I've found that when the gas gauge and computer say empty, you have at least 3 gallons left. My wife likes to come home with an empty tank and then go out to eat so I can fill it for her...what a deal huh? Anyway we live on a mountain and have to go up and down long steep inclines and the engine has never even bobbled looking for fuel. By the way, I don't ever recommend letting your tank get below 1/4 because fuel injected engines have the pump located in the tank and it uses the fuel in the tank to keep cool. Hot pumps do not last long.

I've yet to be able to pump more then ~15gal into my 2008's ~20gal tank. I haven't gone more than maybe 25mi with the low fuel light on though. It's smart on Hyundai's part since that reserve fuel in the tank will keep your fuel pump cooler than running it 'on fumes'. That may be why they did this, or it may be just the design of the tank. It's possible the corporate legal department recommended it for all we know!

Older SFs seemed to have had an issue where the fuel gauge/computer were calibrated for the smaller Sonata tank (16.5 gallons vs the SF's 19.8), resulting in way too early fuel warning lights, and people reporting to never fill more than 15 or 16 gallons. I think they might have resolved this at least to some degree in the 09 modell. On mine I recently experimented with the range, and on one occasion drove it to where the "range" (remaining) showed nothing (---), which was about 30 miles after the light came on (and the range showed 50miles), and then continued for another 25 miles - so basically for a total of what the original prediction was when the light came on. I was able to put 18.5 gallons into the tank - still more than a gallon left - so I guess I could have gone another 20 miles or so...
