When you start off after the car has been parked the trans shifts from 1st to 2nd gear abruptly then to 3rd gear smoothly but will not shift to 4th gear or downshift. Now when you stop the car will only take off in 2nd gear and shift to 3rd gear. Any help would be appreciated

Check for a code in the tcm. The check engine light should be on.

The check engine light is on. Had it scanned yesterday and these were the codes. P1529 P0720 AND P0715. Any ideas on what I need to get this repaired?

P0715 - probably due to a bad input speed sensor
P0720 - bad output speed sensor
P1529 - code is for SCAIR - solenoid circuit malfunction but it is likely tied in with the two above and often goes away once the input and/or output speed sensors are replaced.

The input speed sensor and the output speed sensor are probably between $65-$80 if you pick them up at a Hyundai dealership. If you need to keep the repair as inexpensive as possible, try having the input speed sensor changed and then take it for a short test drive.

Is your car having any of these symptoms:

Harsh/jarring park to reverse or park to drive engagement shock
Occasional failure to shift out of first gear until you get close to 5000 rpm and then you get a harsh shift into 3rd gear

Less likely causes for P0715: malfunction of the underdrive clutch retainer, malfunction of connector or malfunction of the TCM
Less likely causes for P0720: malfunction of connector, malfunction of the TCM or malfunction of the transfer drive gear or driven gear

You might need to have the transmission flushed if the fluid is in bad condition.
