Hi All,

I own a 2001 Santa Fe 2.0D. I have had a couple of instances while driving that the engine just cuts out and stops. When trying to restart it will crank over but not fire. The only way I have found to re-start it is to remove the ignition key set the alarm then un-set the alarm put the key back in the ignition and hey presto it starts and runs fine!

Has anybody got any ideas? As I say it has only happened a couple of times but it's quite off putting that it cuts out while your driving and worse of all it's happened to the wife which made her panic a bit!

Regards

It sounds to me like you've got an immobilizer issue. For whatever reason, it believes that the car is being stolen even though you are obviously using the coded key and the car is in motion. It then cuts out the fuel pump as a theft-prevention measure which is causing your random cutting out and the crank-no start. When you lock and unlock the car, it resets the immobilizer and all is hunky dory for a while.

That seems like the most logical place to start, if you ask me. And oh yes, (IMG:style_emoticons/default/00000732.gif)

Firstly thanks for both of the replies.

As for Montegos' question about the engine light. It's not the engine light but the Amber light with a Car with a Key in it, this flashes just before it stops but not sure what this light is a warning for?

Also if it is an immobiliser issue, do we know if this is a separate unit to the ECU.

Cheers, Carl

The amber key-in-car light is the immobilizer warning light. As the USA models do not have that feature, I'm afraid I can't help you but hopefully somebody else will.

Well Guys,

Just to keep you posted.

The Santa Fe went to the dealers when I eventually managed to get it there. They have looked into and told me it was the Cam and Crank sensors causing the problem, I did query the fact that why was it both sensors as I find it hard to believe they failed exactly at the same time and I'm presumming that the Cam sensor is located somewhere at the top of the engine and the Crank sensor located at the bottom of the engine, but the service manager couldn't answer that ( no surprises there then )!

Sensors and labour £258 ouch!

I'll let you know in the next couple of days if it does actually fix the problem!
