my gf has a 05 elantra and the check engine light just recently came on. i want to find out how to check the codes without going to autozone(or anyone else) to find out. is there any way to check the codes?

example on a 01 jeep grand cherokee you can check the codes by turing the key on and off 3 times in a row and after that it will show a code on the odometer.

welcome to the forums (IMG:style_emoticons/default/00000732.gif)

you can't check the fault codes without the use of a scanner, as you said the best way is to visit autozone where they should do it for free

i think you can short together a couple of pins on the diagnostic connector and the fault codes are then flashed out on the engine check light. I will try to find the information later for you. Otherwise you could buy an OBD2 scanner; there are some around e.g. Genscan for £30 or so. As the car is recent it should be compatible but best to check if anyone has had success before buying one.

alright thanks for the response. i dont want to buy the scanner nor do i want to make my own. i know how reliable these new cars are to the computer and if i short out the computer by accident thats just alot more money to spend. ill just take it to autozone and get it checked out there. thanks again (IMG:style_emoticons/default/liebe011.gif)

Well here is the procedure to flash out the codes through the MIL light; might be useful to someone.
