Hi Everyone,

I've tried searching on this but couldn't find anything. Here in Ontario canada they just made handsfree phone accessories mandatory. I would like to be able to charge things when I'm not in the car, but all 3 cigarette lighters (accessory plugs) turn off when the key is removed. Is there a way around this (ie have at least one socket always alive)?

sorry there was one note in th santa fe G1, but it was adding another plug or running new power lines. I understand that the lighter is part of a harness but I'm not sure of the details.

Thanks

The answer lies with the Late Billy Mays and the Jupiter Jack. We miss ya Billy.

I've often wished for the same thing, but considering Hyundai's roadside assistance obligations you can understand why they wouldn't want thousands of people using their car as an overnight power source.

Miami, that made me laugh. Thanks. I guess you also either need to change the radio station when the phone rings or listening to static all the time.

It seems like there is no easy solution. I was hoping for a simple wiring change, maybe a switch labeled 'Flick this to leave lighters on'. :-)
No such luck I guess.

Thanks everyone

I was also surprised by the lack of "always hot" connection points inside the vehicle. I was looking at options to remedy this once the extended warranty is finished & haven't decided whether I'll buy a different car or add a new circuit and connect it to one of the "Power" outlets, giving me at least one "always hot" connection. An alternative is to add an inverter and use AC components (chargers etc).

A friend of mine at work was telling me about a fix he found on line to make the power port in his Honda Element always live. He said it had some to do with pulling a relay and jumping 2 of the connections in the relay socket. I think this makes sense as long as the power port(s) is the only thing on the circuit.

It was the same on my Toyota Tundra pickup. Remove relay, jumper 2 connections. Of course you have to know where the relay is, and which two connections once you expose them by removing the relay. Perhaps someone with a SantaFe wiring diagram can give us some info.

It is simple to do, the fuse box is right next to the steering wheel. Get a fuse jumper, Radio Shack had them last time I looked, and a power port. $10 dollars total maybe. Jumper an existing always hot fuse, connect it to the power port, and attach the power port under the dash. Plug in your charger and you are good to go. Would help if your charger did not have a light on it to draw unnecessary power. I did this for my GPS, but used a switched fuse so the GPS was not always on. Not all that elegant, but everything will be hidden with just a cord coming out from your dash someplace.

Remove relay ...remove cover from the relay (it snaps on)....... bend or wedge relay contacts to close them permanently......refit relay cover ....replace relay...... job done. I did this on my Terracan.
If you obtain a spare relay to modify it can be swopped back when taking car in for servicing etc.
