Hi all! Long time lurker here, though mostly in the older models' forum.. We traded in our old, reliable, but now-very-clunky 98 Accent for a 2010 Blue.
I'm already loving the thing, even though I've only driven it home from the dealership, and nowhere else (last night).
Something is bugging me, though. The Passenger Airbag window said "OFF" even though my husband was sitting in the passenger seat all the way home (only about 10 minutes). Admittedly, he's underweight, but surely 140 lbs should be enough to make it switch to "ON", right? Is this reason enough to bring it back to the dealership? Should he have been sitting "a certain way"? Or maybe I should have made him jump down on the seat? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) I'd really appreciate your input, guys. There's rarely anyone in the passenger seat, but in the even that there IS someone, I would like the security the air bag affords us...

Sometimes that happens with my gf in the front passenger seat. Turn the car off, and then turn it back on. That should fix it. If not, back to the dealer.

The owner's manual has a description of how to properly sit for proper recognition by the occupant classification system.  Basically sit up straight, feet on the floor.  140 pounds should be plenty to activate the system, it sounds like the sensor mat in the seat cushion may not be working properly. There were a lot of problems with early versions of this system with people of lower weights, but they mostly weighed far less than 140 pounds.  Is there anyone heavier you can have sit down to test?

At any rate, it needs to go back to the dealer.  You may need to bring your husband with you to demonstrate if it happens to work for people of greater weight.

Good luck and keep us posted!

nah i believe its the way ur husband is sitting on, first left chick then right chick later shake like a salt shaker AND if that doesnt take it to the dealer.

Anyway j/k aside, i can say too much about the problem since mine is a rio, but since they are similar cars, my dealer had to replace the seat cushion because went bad (mine is 06), the sensor should activated as soon someone seats there. i dont recall exactly the weight the passenger needs to have, if not mistake is somewhere in the 90.

Good luck.

take it to the dealership. I weight 135, and most of my friends weigh 130-140, and we never have a problem with the airbags. I am not going to lie, i never really sit straight up when i am a passenger.

I'm not too sure how the accents work, but with the `04 corolla, just pushing with my finger lightly on the specific spot of the seat would turn it on.

Dealer, ASAP. There shouldn't be "butt adjustments" needed. If you sit in the seat, the airbag should be enabled. Something is wrong.

BTW, congrats on the Accent.

Airbags are not something to mess around with. Definitely take it to the dealership ASAP (and preferrably before you have another passenger in the car). Also, if you take your husband with you, maybe it would be a good idea that he sit in the back! HAHA

Hello all! Thank you for all the input. I definitely have things to mull upon (though not for long). I sat in the passenger seat and the OFF light did turn off. I weigh about as much as my hubby, so it really might be how he sat. Or.. I dunno. I'll have to have him sit in there again this weekend (It's been crazy at both our work places, and with the weather outside getting all nippy and icy, neither of us were eager to leave the comforts of a warm home). I DID talk to the dealer yesterday about it, and we can definitely set up an appointment as soon as we have the time. I'm not TOO worried just because I rarely have anyone in my passenger seat nowadays. I'll keep you guys posted with regards to this! (Sorry I'm not making direct quotes.. My vid card died and I can't even scroll up or down properly. I guess I'll be breaking the car in over the weekend as I hunt for a decent vid card bargain)
