Hello and welcome to the forum

If you have a service history on your new (used) Terracan, check the kms driven and if over 100,000, check if the service history includes replacing the timing belt. That is probably the most important service and maintenance item in the Terracan's life.

Timing belt should be replaced (along with some other timing parts as the tensioneer) at around 80 thousand kms. (And every 80 thou...). If this has not been done, do it soon.

Besides that, I suggest checking the air filter and if very dirty, replace it. Also, the fuel (diesel) filter can be replaced (this is an expensive one).

A check to brake pads and liners can tell you how soon those should be serviced.

Copgrats on your new purchase.

Thanks for the welcome!

Also for the the congrats on the purchase and advice... I have been looking for a Terracan for a few months and I was having a hard time choosing between a 2000 built LR Discovery and the 2002 Terracan. I was leaning twoards the Terracan because it's more modern and I like the headlamps a lot. Then I saw the car I decided to buy and have spoken with the dealer about giving him my old car and a cash difference. I have sent him pictures of my old car and he agreed to buy it from me. So I went and left the car there, I testdrove the Terracan, cheched it briefly(the dealer also owns a garrage), we made the deal, signed both contracts and came back home. I will return with the documents from my old car after I unregister it and at the begining of december I will go back with the documents and the cash difference to close the deal and come back home with the Terracan. To be onest the car has a service hystory, but only the first service is in the book... the rest of it is empty... the car has been serviced, but I don't know exactly what has been done. It has 164.000 km on the dash. I checked the car when I made the deal, and it has a few problems. Brake pads and disks look very good, the steeering, gearbox and 4x4 work fine. There are some bushes that need to be replaced, I am planning on changing the oil and all the filters(air, polen, oil, diesel). Do you have any ideea vhere the diesel filter is located and if it's a hard job to do? The timing belt and tensioner along with 3 more guiding rolles, I plan to change after I bring the car home. Also when I accelerate it has a delay like it would start to accelerate just a bit and then gain more power. I have read here that this power issue can be caused by a faulty brake switch acuator, by the air flow sensor or the diesel filter. I plan to buy all these 3 parts and change them there myself before I set off. I have a 1000 km to drive home. After I makew it home I plan to do a full inspection of the vehicle and plan the repairs as needed. I am going to attatch a couple of pictures of the car, wich I've taken with my mobile phone's camera before the purchase.

Regards,
Daniel

Fuel filter is at the engine bay, left side close to that black fusebox. BTW, probably the delay in acceleration is due to turbo lag
which is pretty normal in turbocharged diesel engine not using VGT.

Hi Daniel,

Congratulations on your Terracan!
It looks very similar to mine apart from the tinted windows and a different design of wheel.

I also have leather seats (in black in mine) and find them really practical having two young children (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grin.gif)

I have always found the Terracan a solid, reliable 4X4 that does exactly what it's supposed to!

May you have many enjoyable, safe miles in it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/clap.gif)

Regards,
Bob.

As JX290 said, the "delay" in acceleration is due to "turbo lag". You will get used to this condition pretty soon. The diesel filter is as said, on the left side (driver side) of the engine compartment. There are three hoses that go in, with auto connectors that can be unplugged by hand by pressing the sides. There is also an electrical connector on the bottom (water sensor in filter). Is is very easy to replace. Just get the new filter, unbolt the old one, install, plug in the inlet hose (only), then pump a few times the bubble pump in that same line untill the filter is full. Then plug in the other two lines. Thats it.

The pollen filter is also a thing you can do. Here are detailed instruction on how to:

About the air filter, that one is easy too. OTOH, the oil filter I recommend to do it in a lube center because you will be exposed to an "oil bath". Just get the new filter and take your Terracan to a lube center. Use 15W40 oil.

You are right. There is an issue with the brake switch (that goes in the brake pedal), but its behavior is different. When it happens, your engine will drop power instantly for a few seconds. It doesn't matter if is was during acceleration or coasting or during compression braking. At the same time, the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT will come on for those few seconds. Just in case you ever encounter this problem, here's a little help.

Finally, unless you are a qualified mechanic, I recommend doing the timing belt replacement at a Hyundai authorized shop. Many things can go wrong here if the belt is misadjusted or if skipped one or two sprockets.

Thanks for the great info Robert B.!

I plan to change the brake sensor, air flow sensor and fuel filter myself before leaving from the dealer, because I will have a 1000 km trip ahead.

The timing belt I will change when I get home. After the full revision that i will make at the garrage that I regularly service my car.

I'll post my progress here...

Keep in toutch!

I forgot to tell you about the air flow sensor.

There is no need to replace it if its not giving error codes or problems. Just a good cleaning will render it as new. Air flow sensor will last forever unless they get damaged by a mechanical situation (crash, bump or mishandling).

Remove air filter cover and loosen the air hose fastener that attaches the sensor to the intake hose (air). Then, without touching the sensor electronics, spray a good amount on electronics contact cleaner and let it drip out. Several sprays are needed and keep spraying untill the liquid that drops out comes out clean.

There is no need to remove the air mass flow sensor from the air filter cover.

I've done it twice on my Terracan and its unbelievable what difference it makes. Less smoke (exhaust), better mileage, better idle and better acceleration.

Hi Robert!

That's something I cannot risk... if it has a problem and cleaning does not solve it I will not be able to buy one there in a coupole of hours I will have. I will buy the diesel filter, the air flow sensor and the brake switch and change them there, it's about 160 euros for all the 3 of them, so it's not such a big deal.

Thanks for the tip antway.

Keep in toutch,
Daniel

Hello everyone!

As planned, I went to Germany to pick up my new aquisition... Unfortunatly It had to make it home on a platform... :-(

I have bought a new air filter, a new diesel filter, I cleaned the airflow sensor with a special spray bought from the carparts store and replaced the brake switch. After that I got temporary 5 day transport registration plates for the Terry and I've hit the highway. After 60 miles of driving the car started making a lot of grey smoke and I have stopped at the first emergency parking.

I then phoned a guy that owns a platform and thows damaged vehicles for a living and fortunatly for me he was also in Germany, at about 60 miles distance from me. In 3 hours he came to pick up the Terry and took it home. I had to take the bus back home ... The car got home before me...

Anyway, when I got home we dropped the car at my mechanic and he just finisheddiagnosing it. The turbocharger is dead. The mechanic said that the axel is broken and it cannot be reconditioned.

I will keep you guys posted with my progress and hope that I will be able to enjoy my car soon.

Best regards,
Daniel.

Hello everyone!

A little update:

Unfortunatly it seems that I am very unlucky... I found a post here about a 2003 Terracan turbine, I contacted the guy, I payed for the turbine in advance, he emailed me stating that it would be delivered in 3 days to me and now, after 3 working days I still did not recieve the parcel. I phoned DHL and thay've told me that my parcel is in the Netherlands and that it is a 6-7 working days delivery service!!! I just couldn't believe it. I finally got a hold of the seller and he states that DHL has lied to him telling him that it was a 3 day delivery service. I asked him to file a complaint and hopefully I will have the parcel this year.

I'll update the progress I make... hopefully I will get to enjoy the car soon.

I wish you all a happy new tear!

Daniel

Happy new year all!

Just repaired the car, unfortunatly I still haven't recovered the money for the repair of the damage sufferd by the turbine during transportation.

I got a new battery and a HID Xennon kit. It is a mejor improovement as you can see below.

I'll keep posting my progress here!

All the best,
Daniel
