The 60K timing replacement was done (by certified mechanics) on my XG , approx a week ago .
I statrted the car up later and severe noise and vibration resulted.
I had it towed to Hyundai and they indicated the belt had been left loose, and therefor this is not a warranty item
Towed back to garage that had done the work and they verified that the belt was loose and timing on one head had slipped.
They say it is Hyundai fault as the (oil driven tensioner had failed ?)
Where does this leave me?
I removed the car from their facility,as they clearly lack the equiptment to correct this.

What is the right repair for all of this ??

Thanks

it is always a good idea to replace the tensioner when you fit a new belt, however they are just using this as an excuse to cover up bad workmanship, they have obviously not taken enough care when they fitted the belt and tensioned it up.
the problem you now have is down to them to put right, if they still refuse you have the right to take any legal action you see fit, l am not sure of what sort of redress you have in your state, get some advice and good luck

sad to hear that this had to happen to you as you were just being a responsible XG owner by replacing the belt at 60k. They have a legitimate reason to not warranty the repair though I dont buy it. Did they recommend it anywhere on the repair order? That's one thing you can argue, also how many miles were put from the time of repair to when the trouble started. The hydraulic tensioner will not commonly leak at 60k miles maybe not even at 100k, it's a matter of testing it out when it's removed. At this point you may have internal engine damage like bent valves so one of the cylinder heads will need to come off, but then nothing has been proven to you. What state are you in

Thanks for the advice,
I live in Pennsylvania.
I had hoped to keep this nice machine for a long time, I only drove it about 20 miles before the disaster.

Sounds like that shopped screwed it up, they should take responsibility for the fault. The 3.0 and 3.5 timing belts are no joke and are difficult to time. Ive never seen a tensioner leak at such low milage ( as mac said ). If the timing jumped you run the high risk of severe internal engine damage. Where in Pennsylvania are you located?

20 miles is definatly their fault. I dont care if they did recommend it and you denied it. For it to go out that quick then it must have been really bad and they should have denied doing the work as they should have expected it to happen. I really think they did'nt install it correctly as "vizlay" mentioned, they are difficult to install and even a good mechanic can screw up cuasing this exact issue. If I wasn't a mechanic and was in your shoes and had no other option, I'd take it to a dealer and have them document what they see. If the dealer tells you the tensioner is blown then that answers your question but if the Hyundai certified technician doesn't believe that was the cause then he will document it as installation error and you could use that to your advantage. In California they have BAR (Bereau of automotive repair) to handle such cases, though I dont know about your area.

As an update on this timing belt disaster, all is back together with the compression on #1-3-5 reported in specs.

I borrowed a sensitive electronic pickup and the rear (slipped cam) cylinder head has somewhat more "noise" than the front

However, Hyundai service indicates that the warranty has been negatively impacted.

I am at the end of my rope with this.

Can any one advise me of an "automotive" Lawyer in the Philadelphia, PA area (or anywhere)

Thanks again to all of you and for this most helpful site

In the ongoing saga of the timing belt disaster, I have just found a nut and bolt trapped by the battery rack

It is approx 2 inches long and 3/8 diam. SEE attached photo.

Any thoughts on where this may be from given the recent events

Thanks

l don't reconise this bolt as being any part of the timing belt assembly....this could have come from anywhere.

how are you getting on with this issue? l can't help you much on the legal issues on this because l am on the other side of 'the pond'
