Hey all,

I've been having issues with my input speed sensor and have been putting off the repair for sometime now.

The plastic piece on the top of my rad cracked this past weekend, I ordered the rad on Thursday and it arrived on Friday.

Changed the rad on Saturday but I am still having issues.

I think there maybe a leak somewhere else. (coolant still seems to be dripping from somewhere)

Just wondering if it would make sense to assume ...

Bad Input Speed Sensor + heavy highway driving (RPM @ 3-5k) = over heating (busted cooling system)

I've ordered the input speed sensor from ebay. (input & output speed sensor assy for < $110, including shipping to ON, Canada)

Also, I picked up a thermostat from Parts Source for about $16 and thinking about checking the resevoir and hoses for leaks.
Other than that, I don't really have any other approaches to this issue.

The thermostats are known issues on the elantra 2.0. If the car got hot, replace the t-stat, If it has more than 60,000 miles, replace the t-stat. Check the hoses at the t-stat housing the clamps sometimes fail and they'll leak there. The input sensor on your car is a seperate part from the output sensor, The assy that includes both and is connected is for the older elantras and accents.l

I've changed the thermostat and the car is no longer overheating! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif)

I have yet to recieve the speed sensors, i'll update the thread once those are in. (i am still getting the gear slipping)

ok so, update time..

i just replaced the input speed sensor about an hour ago, it took about 20 minutes (tops) to install
i followed the picture instructions posted by Brett W., they were super easy to follow

i've noticed that some of the jerking is still there but now i am going into fourth gear
as of now i'm pretty pleased with the results, hopefully it'll stay this way!!

if you're reading this and find that you've had the same issue, you could try to change the input sensor... the obd2 tool gave me 4 codes, (P0755, P0715, P0765, P1529)
(the picture-instructions which show the location of the input sensors are titled dtc_p0715_repair_01)

judging from the number of posts that i've read... it seems as though overheating and hard down shifting (not going into fourth gear) is a common problem with the 01 2.0L Elantras

if you need to replace your rad, i would recommend cooldirect.ca, i got the rad next day (you can call them and ask for an eta), this cost me $168 w/ shipping to Ontario, Canada
if you need the speed sensor, i would recommend fourgreen.com, i recieved the sensors in 4-5 days, i got the input and output sensors (two different sensors, they are compatible with 01-07 elantras) they cost me $107 w/ shipping

the dealer quoted me $342 for the rad and about $240 for each sensor

also, you can download the haynes manual for 01 elantras from torrentz.com, search the keywords 'Hyundai Elantra 1996 2001 Haynes Repair Manual'

if everything stays good, i'll try to post a follow up in about a week
if not... i'll be back a lot sooner asking for help
