Just bought a 2002 accent, 78,000 km ....manual says I should change timing belt at 98,000 km......does the fact that it is 7 years old have any relevance ? Can I wait til then ?

Ditto, we have interference engines so timing belt maintenance is important. You can take the upper timing belt cover off and inspect the belt. Look for cracks, missing teeth, and frayed chords. You'll need to dig a little deeper to see how much it's streched. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif)

I had my 2002 done about 6 months ago. She was pretty well past the 98,000 miles. She didn't have problems, but it was worn, and it was time. They also replaced the water pump as a preventative thing. If you have the money, go for it.

I just had my 2005 (106,000KM) replaced. Was pretty much gone. Note - the air conditioning and alternator belts were completely worn/cracked and ready to give out.

Was the 60000 replacement done? If not you are in big risk.

I'm pretty sure you mixed that up. It's not 98,000 miles. It's 60,000 miles or 98,000 km. Isn't it?

It's another one of the 48 month/96,000km maintenance Hyundai recommends. T-belt, plugs, trans service, coolant flush, fuel filter & fuel tank air filter.

What's at risk if I don't change the timing belt at the specified intervals?

It's recommended because you don't know how much wear the belt has gone through. It's not that by that point the belt might not be alright but it could have damaged teeth, exposed cords etc. You just never know. And god knows you don't want to break a t-belt.

If you dun't change your timing belt, you'll have to change your engine.
