When I've had the ticking sound in the past it was a bad cell in the battery. The battery may only be putting out 10v as a cell is shorting out. If you have a volt meter, measure the battery with the engine not running, nothing turned on. Should be 12 +/- .2 volts. Anything less, get a new battery. No volt meter, when you can't start the car, but your radio and dash lights work, do they dim when you try to crank it? Or when it can't start, turn on your headlights and crank and if they dramatically dim, time for a new battery. When the mechanics had it, did it fail to start? Best of luck
