You're right of course, its nowhere near what Hyundai claim but we're not the pro drivers that they use! I still think a lot of people are going to be even more disappointed come the summer though.

I think you will find that it is not a driver on a normal road but on a rolling road and performing a given of start / stop operations over 2.5 miles for the urban test and 4.3 miles for the extra urban test. The test cars have to have done 1800 miles before being tested.

Then we have even less chance of getting anywhere near their claims with such carefully stage managed results/claims. No hope I know but the Goverment should force them to make the tests more realistic, otherwise its all a bit of a con.

Ah, I knew I would find the link to the basic test details eventually:-

http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/information/consumption.asp

And yes I think it is a bit of a con because they should be more representative than they appear to be. Having said that, some values for some cars are seemingly quite accurate. The question is why ?

The link was very interesting, now I know how they test them.

I know they have to have the same test for all cars, so they get 'fair' results but it doesnt really represent Mr Average out here in the real world. Members of Joe public driving round the streets, motorways, Sunday afternoon drives etc would be more meaningful surely? Too much to ask though, the manufacturers want it all to look good!

I was going to add something about dear Gordon, him of Clarkson fame, doing something about it but he wont be around long enough to implement anything!

Just as a matter of interest... has anyone noticed if the 'miles to empty' was always indicating the same number of miles after a full refill ? I haven't particularly paid attention except earlier on were it was showing 396. I think I have seen this figure before, can anyone confirm ?
I always follow the same routine when filling-up which is, full flow until the first overfill cut-out, wait for a couple of seconds then slow flow until again the 1st overfill cut-out and that's it (I don't round-up to the nearest Ltr or £).
I'm thinking that some of the variations in MPGs are bound to be, at least in part, explained by the variations in overfill cut-out... sensitivity of the various pumps used and so, would the 'miles to empty' figure be a better indicator of the actual amount of fuel that has been 'squeezed' in the tank ? Having said that, I not sure that the difference between pumps would be that big... or would it ?

Re-reading that... I not really sure I'm making sense there (IMG:style_emoticons/default/puzzled.gif) !

After a fill up mine usually resets to about 353-356 miles, doesnt seem to matter how I drive I get about 40 mpg. Like you I follow a routine when filling up so my readings arent far off.
