Hi.
I have recently noticed that my Azera makes a "knocking" sound right after starting the engine. It just about a dozen of fast short knocks one after another and it is gone after 2 seconds (like a diesel engine started on low temp. ;-)) It appears more often when the engine is rather cold.
Thanx for any advice.

Thanx a lot.
I will check now if this is just because my Azera is driven rarely or it is tensioners problem, which I hope not because Hyundai will not fix it for free in Poland ;-)))

Is this something that needs to be fixed fast and can do more damage if left like that?

From what I've read, it would probably last a good long time without replacement as it does get oil within seconds of the engine start...

QUOTE (jsinton @ Oct 12 2009, 12:00 AM) That's right, the tensioner sound is supposed to go away very quickly and not come back until it cools off. The other guys sound is different. so, do have any idea about my problem ??? last week i went to the local dealer, the mechanic told me the sound comes from the pistons , and you have to rebuilt the engine, (the car is out of the warranty ) , and it will cost you about 1600$ ( the price only for the parts) and i told him , i did not buy a new car to rebuilt it ...........

The presentation in the video does sound like "piston slap."
On the i'net:
Piston slap is nothing new to piston driven internal combustion engines and compressors. It is the secondary (sideways or perpendicular) movement of a piston against the side of a cylinder bore where the primary movement of a piston is intended to be parallel (up and down) to the cylinder bore. All piston driven internal combustion engines and compressors have a certain amount of piston slap.
Excessive piston slap occurs when the clearance between the piston and the cylinder bore is too great. The piston to cylinder bore clearance becomes too great either through wear, mismatched pistons and cylinder bores at manufacturing or, a combination of both. The audible noise associated with excessive piston slap is due to the perpendicular impact of the piston against the wall of the cylinder bore. Audible piston slap is typically loudest when the engine is first started up. The pistons then expand with heat reducing the piston to cylinder bore clearance thus, reducing the perpendicular impact of the piston against the cylinder wall and its resulting noise.

i know a lot of azera (3.3) owners they did not face any problem at all.........
also i know the (3.3) lass power than (3.8) but much better quality... At Least That's What dealer Said to me....
The only reason makes me go for (3.8) :
is the price between them is about 266 $
(19466$) for 3.8 and (19200$) for 3.3 ----all of them GLS model
also the gas price is very cheap in k.s.a
* regular -91 octane (0.45 $) for 1 gallon * Premium- 95 octan (0.6 $ ) for 1 gallon
also the cheapest one is diesel (0.252 $) for 1 gallon
i can fill up the whole tank about 9$ (i am using 91)
