I have a Haynes manual and this is for a New Zealand assembled Excel, the manual describes the mechanical fuel pump being below the inlet manifold so its at the rear of the engine and from what the manual is telling me you need to jack up the car and fit axle stands and get to it from underneath the vehicle, the manual also say'syou should fit new gaskets and notes QUOTE: Where the push rod is located on the apex of the camshaft eccentric, it will be difficult to to insert and tighten the mounting bolts, Where this is the case position the engine at TDC before fitting the pump.

It is easy to set no.1 at TDC , remove the spark plugs and you can see the piston crown moving up to TDC align that with the timing marks on the pulley and timing guide marks.
