hi, i have am facing the same problems as you. i recently bought a used 2001 accent GL hatchback, automatic transmission. i was told by the dealer that since it is auto (and considering that it is 8 yrs old already), the fuel efficiency should be about 8km/L for city driving and 12km/L for long trips. however i thought this was supposed to be a fuel efficient car. i purchased the car at 105302kms if that helps.
is what the dealer said true?
thanks!

G'day, First post. My g/f has a 2001 Hyundai Accent 1.5L and I've been doing maintenance and repairs so I thought I should join the club. I've been keeping a record of our mileage since the start of the year so I know the fuel consumption of our car pretty well. On the highway we do 6.0-6.5L/100km and city driving 7.0-7.5L/100km. We've driven from Canberra to Melbourne (~650km) on one tank. Although I wouldn't recommend running on empty as you suck up all the gunk at the bottom of the fuel tank. This can clog up your fuel injectors. 340km from one tank sounds too low unless all you do is stop-start in traffic and carrying a load. Do you drive with one foot on the brake? (IMG: style_emoticons/default/grin.gif) Do you have correct pressure in the tyres? You may need a wheel alignment. How is the engine running? When did you last replace your spark plugs? What condition were they in?

Also your fuel gauge may be dodgy. Rather than seeing how many k's you do between filling up, find out how many k's you do per litre.

Hi, thanks for the reply.
i just filled up petrol today and i calculated that i do about 7.3kms per litre. i tend to brake quite often and accelerate hard before this, but i've tried to drive consciously now. however that was my second time filling up the car only since i've bought it (i've recorded the mileage in between). i don't drive for long, i've do only short trips daily.
if i take the dealer for his word (he says 8kms for city driving), then what i got (7.3kms for city driving) should be about right. i've told the dealer that people get about 12kms but he said that was impossible, only if it's for long trips. he added that because it is an automatic transmission, it takes up far more petrol.
what other things can i check for the car? or what signs should i look out for etc...? what should the correct tyre pressure be? i don't know about spark plugs, but i do know a full service was last done on 3/10/09.
thanks!

Hey, thanks for all u guys replying (IMG: style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) lol, i dont use my brakes that much cuz my cars a manual, about 3 months ago, i got brand new tyres put on, my engine runs great, i recently got it serviced, and the spark plugs and everything were replaced. When i first bought the car, i would fill it up with petrol and the gauge would read half full..so i took it 2 hyundai and they placed the fuel sending unit, now everything is fine..but im trying to use as much fuel as possible, before i fill up next, and so far im up 2 about 360kms...and i have under 1/4 of a tank left..so i guess we will see how it goes (IMG: style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Thanks!

thanks! An automatic will tend to use more fuel but not that much. So we do about 14km/L around town but our city driving is mostly driving at 60-80kph with a bit of start stop. Lots of short trips with start-stops could explain why you're only getting 7.3km/L. You should fill up a few more times and see what the average is. Go on a day trip if you can and see what your highway mileage is like. There might be nothing wrong with your car. Tyre pressures are a factor but not significant unless they're really low. I usually pump them up to 35psi. It's a bit more than recommended but your tyres will last longer. Take more care in the rain though. If your car drifts to one side or another while driving straight on a flat road the wheels may need alignment. Badly misaligned wheels can eat up the mileage. Did they connect up a diagnostics tool when they did the service? This can tell you of problems with the engine, emission controls etc.

My best gasoline consumption is 14L/300km on high way and 1L/12km on town. To make your gasoline more efficient, use your rpm between 2000-3000 rpm, don't accelerate your car rapidly, keep follow car that has more dimension and more faster than your car, also don't often to use your brake.
