hi all, 2 wks ago my van wouldnt start, i was parked on a hill, so i rolled down it - and hey ho it started wonderfully, i drove for 20 mins to my next ob and parked it on a hill close to the job.when i turned the engine off, and back on again it started! when i had done my job and came back out it didnt start....so i kept starting on hills or push starting it, then i took it into my garage and was told i needed 2 new glow plugs! i paid the garage for 2 new glow plugs to be fitted! when done, the garage rang and told me it still wasnt starting "right", i asked what that meant and basically was told "the glow plugs dont seem to be heating up for long enough. the mechanic then said he didnt really know what the problem was.

it starts when its push started only, it turns over rather sluggishly, but the battery is fine.
should i get a compression test? injectors cleaned? if theres a problem with the starter motor, why does the vehicle start after a push start/long run- then starts on key?

can anybody advise a course of action before i lose my job...

thanx

Sounds like an engine pre-heating issue to me.
When you bump start it how long does it take to start from cold? 10m or 100m?
A properly pre-heated diesel engine will start pretty much instantly when the starter engages. This I'd suggest is why it re-started OK once it had been running.
Diesel will self ingite at about 250 deg C. This is achieved by pre-heating then engine with the glowplugs and when they are going their job the engine internal will be nice and warm and the engine will fire strait away. If the glow plugs are not warming then engine' then cracking

Sorry, doing this on my phone hence multiple posts.......cranking will bring up the internal temp in the engine. Hence if you are rolling it down hill in 3rd gear for 100m then then internal engine temp will build up and off you go. That's the theory.
The glow plugs going out too early will cause this.

Why they are going out too early I can't help you with I'm afraid.

A really rough and ready way to pre-heating it is to carefully use a plumber propane torch to warm up the objectors. But I didn't tell you t that.

thanx for the replys, i only have to push it 20-30 feet, doesnt even need to build up much speed, and off i go in 2nd gear. i will enquire about pre-heating problem some more b 4 i bother to spend one more penny on it...i would like it fixed though..the mechanic defo said the plugs werent heating for long enough, i wondered whether he'd even put the right type in..then thought what do i know...lol

right know ill jus av to wait...ahhh shame, i love my lil hyundai van!

hi, per the service manual, the glow plugs should come and stay on for 36 secs when you turn the key to ON position. easiest way is to put a voltmeter on the terminal and the body of the glow plug and turn the key on. observe the voltage drop, it should be above 9Volts in all instances.

if the glow plugs are not coming on/staying on during cold start up, then there's your problem.

Hi
One of the things the service guy should hsve checked was your timing belt to make sure it hadn't slipped- get the timing checked and also glo plug 3 as that one does cause sluggish starts.

Cheers
