He's right, it's not a gear it's the cable that seems broken. The end of the cable that is inside is supposed to protrude out about 1/4 inch andhave like a keyway on it. If you forced it on without lining up the the key then it snapped and is probobly sitting in the sensor part right now.
Ok, I got the thing fixed and it wasn't pretty. I put in a new speedometer and it shredded the nylon gear in about 2 miles of driving. Meanwhile the transmission now is leaking gear oil through the input shaft in bell housing. I got a supposed seal and new speedometer, dropped the tranny but the seal is inside the transmission. I took the transmission apart and the seal was the wrong one.
Also I found the old speedometer gear and it was bashed up pretty good along with the gear on the ring on the differential. I figured it would be pretty hard to find a replacement and I didn't want to mess with setting up a new differential so I ended up purchasing a used transmission for $350.
So... moral of the story is that when you are removing the tranny disconnect the cable near the transmission (it'll unscrew) and don't take off the 10mm bolt that holds it in place on the transmission case as it might (as in my case) drop down into the belly of the differential and get chewed up when you take it off.
