The check engine light just came on in my brand-new (902 miles) 09 GLS. Car seems to be running fine and I'm going to get over to the dealer for look on Saturday morning. I was just curious if anyone else has their check engine light coem on so soon.

Thanks.

With both a Tucson, and an Accent in my garage, I have found that between the two, the light has come on 7 times (74K miles) - and in every case, it went off by itself, threw no codes, sometimes went to the dealership, other times it went off before I got there.

Things like not putting the gas cap on tightly. being low on gas, adding just a small amount, will set it off too.

Did you gas up at a new place? Are you low on gas? Is the cap on tight? - Sometimes simply taking the cap off, wait 30 seconds, screw it back on, and before you need to add gas it will turn off.

For my family - it has never stayed on longer than 48hrs.

HTH

Mine cam on the day I bought the car, only 205 miles. Turned out the was an issue with the exhaust manifold and it had to be replaced. No issues since.

Thanks for the info. My wife will be gassing it up today. We'll see if the light goes out. If it's still on tomorrow, I drop by the dealership.

If the light is still on after you restart the engine, it will probably stay on until your dealer resets it.

The check engine light (or MIL, for Malfunction Indicator Light) is one of the most common malfunctions on modern cars. Although they can indicate a mechanical problem (and I'm sure this thread will attract some examples), in most cases they are a simple sensor malfunction that is easily fixed by the dealer.

Were there any significant events or conditions you can recall leading up to the CEL? As others have posted, perhaps a loose gas cap or low fuel light?

When I test drove my Santa Fe, the vehicle had BARELY any gas in it; in fact, after 2 minutes of driving both the low fuel and check engine light came on simultaneously. I filled up with a couple gallons and the low fuel light went away, but the CEL was still on. The dealer said that it was probably because I didn't tighten the gas cap all the way and that it would go away within 20 miles. Well, it didn't and I took it back to the dealer. It turned out that the canister control valve (CCV) was bad and they replaced it under warranty, and no problems or CEL since. I guess the low fuel condition may have damaged the CCV somehow.

I have long been under the impression that the manufacturers tend to employ a reset schedule for transient issues that says something like: Find problem, set CEL. Don't see the same problem after 15 starts, reset CEL.

My 2008 Santa Fe has been at the dealers 3X in the past month due to check engine light coming on and my car is idling rough. They replaced the throttle sensor and the assembly the 2nd time. First 2 times, my car was towed to the dealer. 3rd time, I discovered that the "Roadside Assistance" Hyundai offers only covers 2x a year. So I drove the car to the dealership and it has been at the shop since Tuesday and the computer had no codes and they can't replicate the problem.

Yikes! Electronic throttle problems can get scary. If the system goes out completely, all you're left with is fast idle (limp mode). I don't care if the vehicle is brand spanking new, I'd still read the code before taking it in. You don't have to "clear" it, but you can to see if it comes back. All it requires is a "CAN" (controller area network) compliant OBDII code reader. They can be had for ~$40. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001LHVOV...rd_i=B0007LEG2K

Back to the dealer 10 x 15x times?? The dealer is staling or just incompetent ! Dealers hate to work for warrant money!!!!!
Look for another dealer for repairs ! Some independent repair shops will work with you and give you an evaluation of the problem
at least you will have a second opinion.

keep us posted (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif)

Update on my 2008 Hyunda Santa Fe, 9,000 miles. This is the 5th time in the shop. 4th time the dealer kept is six days and because the check engine light went off before I got to the dealership, they said they couldn't pull a code from my car, so couldn't duplicate the error. I had the car 4 days, check engine light came back on and when I got to dealership, they pulled a code and are now replacing the PVC Valve. In the last 6 weeks, I have had my car approximately 3 weeks. The remainder of the time it is at the dealership. I really like my car, but do I have a Lemon?

Legally? Because your location says only "USA", it is impossible to tell you. Each State manages its lemon laws in a different way.

You can find the current statues for each State here: http://www.carlemon.com/

Compare your service counts and days out of service with whatever prevails where you live.

No lemon just regular fun.

Happen to me also, I posted my experience here a while back. After 4 months of back and forth to the dealer they figured out it was a bad O2 sensor.

It will go off, after some tym, but when it goes off..remember that..whenever u want to fill up da gas switch off the car always, and when its done shut the cap tightly..coz if it is not tightened the sensor senses that and shows that check engine light.

I hope I am not bumping this topic but my CEL comes on after I fill up with gas every time. Not immediately but 5 -10 miles or so or an overnight stop. I have had it reset at various places and it always shows up as an 'over gassing' problem.
I don't overfill and I do turn the gas cap at least 6-7-8 clicks.
Is there any maintenance I can do to stop the check engine light showing after I fill up???

We had a check engine light in our 2009 CRDI SF at about 2500km. When it happened it would not go past third gear. Turned out to be a faulty output sensor on the gearbox.

No problems since. It was quickly diagnosed by roadside repair by plugging into the data port under the dash.

Stew.

You've got an EVAP system code popping up. It could be as simple as a bad check valve in the gas cap, or could be a failed purge solenoid or system leak on the EVAP system itself. Basically the system needs to see a slight positive pressure on the fuel tank. If not, a code will set. If you can smell fumes around the fuel filler door and the cap is seated, generally the check valve in the cap isn't seating and the cap needs to be replaced.

If you get a CEL and your around an Auto Zone or Advanced Auto they can read the code if one is thrown.
Unless you had your own OBDII Scanner. Just adding to the archive....
