Hey listen.

I was thihnking today that there must be some desire to ask questions of a sales rep without having the "fear" of sales pressure.

So here I am.

I'm Don, I've worked at a high volume Hyundai store(second highest sales in Canada) for over 4 years as both a sales rep, and manager.

Do you have any questions about the process? Warranty? Or, here's an idea, the products? I can answer. Want to vent about a salesperson? Maybe I can give you their perspective.

Whatever. I'm here and this is your chance to ask me whatever you want. Fire away.

Hi Don, I bought a Elantra Touring this weekend in California. The buying experience was horrendous. I won't go into details (trying to get it out of my brain as it is).

But I do have a couple of questions. I was told that what the dealer made on one ET purchase was $700. The salesman told us that he got $75 per car that he sells with a $50 bonus if we rate the experience as a 10. Does this sound about right?

And they offered an extended warranty for $1,700. Is that the average cost? We didn't buy it because we felt like we were spending too much as it was.

Do Hyundai dealers "deal" at all? Or are the margins so tight that they don't have much room? (BTW, I'd read bad reviews about the dealer we went to, but they seemed to be the only ones near us who had an ET, so we took a chance with them.)

Thanks!

Well I just want to say that I live and work in Ontario, Canada so I don't know a lot about the U.S.

However typically the dealer, not the manufacturer dictates the pay plan. What the sales rep told you is about right. Where I work we are paid $150(Cdn) at least per deal. If the customer fills out and mails in the Customer Service Survey our pay plan indicates that there is a year end bonus for the sales rep with the highest avereage.

$700.00 is about right for the margin on the car. The Touring really isn't a huge money maker. Most of the cars have less then $1500 in profit. Dealers may discount, but there isn't the same kind of room that domestic auto makers sometimes have.

$1700.00 is about right for the extended warranty as well. There is typically about $500-$800 profit in the warranty as well. But the sales person doesn't get that money the F&I manager get's paid on that profit.

I have a question you might be able to answer for me. I have a 2003 Hyundai tiburon made in canada. I bought it off someone for a good price and drove it down to texas (U.S.). I lost the keys for it and the american dealers arent able to make me new keys because they dont have the codes for canadian made hyundai's. Is there a way to get new keys made for this thing cause i cant take it back to canada. There has to be a way to take out the immobilizer and get another igniton or something. Im so lost!!!

Hello Don,

I live in Calgary, Alberta. I am thinking of buying a 2009 ELANTRA L 5 Speed Manual. Continental Silver for the outside colour and Black Cloth for the interior. The only extra I want is the block heater. I've gone onto hyundaicanada.com and gone through the "build it price it" menu. It ends up looking like this:

Vehicle Price: 15,845.00
Cash Price Adjustment: 0.00
Other Cash Adjustment: 3850.00
Selected Accessories: 154.95
Delivery and Destination: 1495.00
Other Taxes and Levies: 20.00
GST: 683.25
PST: N/A
HST: N/A
Total Vehicle Price: $14,348.20

Clean Air Returned Vehicle:
Government Incentive: 300
Hyundai Clean Air Cash: 800

I assume that if I were to trade in my 1986 Civic that is still registered and insured that it would drop the total vehicle price down $800 for a new total vehicle price of $13,548.20

Is this correct? What is the actual price that I will be asked to pay? I met a salesman last month who told me that they add on fees of about $500. Is this just a scam? Could you give me an actual price that I'd be asked to pay? Also, when do the 2010 Elantras come onto the lot? Would it be worth my while to wait until they do in order to get a better price on a 2009 model? Thanks.
