I am looking for a cheap(ish) rear bike rack for an i10. Preferably one that will take at least two bikes and one that sits high enough so I don't need a number plate / lights attachment.

Any ideas where I can get one?

Thanks. x

Tricky one with a new car there's no guarantee that hatch mounted (whether high or low) racks will be safe to use, safest option is to opt for a tow bar mount or roof mount carrier, both of which Hyundai seem to feel are safe to use. Ask your dealer what racks can be used safely with the car then buy the rack at the cheapest place you can find.

Probably not the most competitive prices but a good place to start

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try Halfords. I have reservations about their expertise generally but I suppose it's a good place to start. The website has a rack starting at less than £40 and as I won't be using it every day it may be a goer. As a 5'4" girlie I'm avoiding anything roof mounted as I'll probably need to accost a passing male stranger to get the bloody bike up there!! Thanks all. X

Hello

I bought one of these for an i10 http://www.towequipe.co.uk/products/cycle-...ier-805704.html (try that web site product 805704 if that link does not work)

I also bought a couple of thin straps from Halfords to secure the front wheels of the bike.

It seems fine - Ive been 800 miles with it and one bike, but I've not tried two bikes

cheers

Sean

First point I realise that you are looking for a cheapish solution and don't want to use a tailboard but have you considered a towbar and towbar mounted cycle rack? It will save you having to lift the bikes and eliminate the dangers of scratching the rear bodywork.

I have a Witter towbar fitted to my i10 and it costs around £120 including ball and electrics (the i10 does not require a bypass relay). You can also get the detachable version for around £190, it is actually same bar as the fixed but comes with a detachable ball.

This bar is very easy to fit, just remove four plastic screws underneath the rear bumper then the bar slips inside the bumber and attaches to four fixing points (2 either side) that are already fitted to the i10 chasis (30 mins max). The advantage of the Witter bar is that the rear bumber does not have to be cut. To wire it up you may well want to get a mobile towbar fitter in as the rear trim needs to be removed to get at the wiring looms which run down both sides of the car. Not realising how easy it was to fit the bar i paid around £70 to have both the bar fitted and the electrics wired.

A real advantage of a towbar is that it is the ultimate parking sensor and rear end protector. What really surprised me was how well the i10 1.2 tows, it is all too easy to forget that you have a trailer behind.

That looks great and super cheap. Any other issues since your 800 miles?

Because of where I park a roof or tow bar solution isn't practical. The bike will fit in the boot with the seats down but then mud is an issue.

My MTBs are £1k+ rides so obviously I'm quite paranoid about them falling off. Normally only 1 at a time.

I use a Halfords high mounted rack which takes 3 bikes. It works perfectly well, I've done 100 mile trips and never had a problem, but it is a bit fiddly to fit, and it would be very easy to steal by just cutting through the straps.

Have you tried putting a good, strong tarpaulin down first? You can buy it in different sizes. The heavy duty one is very strong and waterproof. This would protect your car from mud and water and any marks you might do whilst putting your bike in your car.
