I believe your Autozone chain will extract the codes generated by a CEL for free (in the hope that they will get the repair work I guess!).

You won`t be able to do it yourself without a scanner.

autozone can't check anything under 96
advance auto can't check any imports under 96 but everything else they can.
buy an repair manuel it give instructions on how to check the light.
