Are the brakes/rotors covered by the warranty? I'm the second owner of the car so it has the remainder of the 5 year warranty. When I bought my car a little over a month ago, I was told there was 40% of the brake pads left but on the back brakes, one side is all the way gone. It started making a scraping sound on the way home, so I had my brother check, he said since I caught it as soon as it started the rotor only has a small scrape on it, but there is no way I went through 40% in the time I've had it. He said the front brakes look new so the mechanic probably just assumed the back were ok.

Brake WEAR is not covered under the warranty. Pads will almost never be covered. The rotors are covered under certain conditions, but being gouged/scraped due to pad wear is NOT on of those conditions.

You're still welcome to take it to the dealer if you think there's a problem with the brake SYSTEM (sticking calipers, etc.), but I doubt you'd have much luck with that. It looks to me like you're on the hook for a brake job.

Thanks for the quick responses. I figured as much. I did a search and had found the warranty info, I was just wondering if it would be likely the dealer would cover it since they had said everything had been inspected before I purchased it. I have a paper that says the breaks had 40% left, and there is no way that was the case.

If the dealer certified or guaranteed, in some way, that the brakes would last longer, then you may have a chance for the dealer to pay for the repair. Hyundai probably will not.

In my (and, it seems, most peoples') experience, MOST dealers don't stand behind anything they sell. Once they've made the sale, you might as well be a ghost. Either way, though, it's worth a shot. The worst they can do is say no. Good luck.

Resolution: I took the car in and they fixed it for free! Love Hyundai. I think there is still an issue with the calipers, tho. Thanks everyone for your help and information!
