Hi guys, My dad just bought me this car (06 Sonata) and the right side brake light is out. I told him I could do it. He chuckled and said OK. Well, I opened the trunk and didn't instantly see a place to change the bulb.

I did see 2 plastic type hex screws. Do I remove thoes and slide out the light or does the trunk lid liner have to come off. I don't want to ruin anything.

There is also a license plate light burned out. Do the Plastic covers pop out?

I'm only 17 so I have a lot to learn

thanks Nancy

The car's manual is the place to go for sure. If you need it send me a PM and I'll send you a PDF.

You can ask Paul to email you the PDF (it's a 12 MB file), or you can go to
http://www.hyundaiusa.com/owners/myhyundai...nersmanual.aspx
Create an account, log in, and then go to MY VEHICLE. On the bottom right of the "my vehicle" box you select "Owner's Manual" and download it yourself...

Here, since I DO want you to show daddy you're capable of doing things, this is the page....

Here's a link to the official Manual and some other neat stuff. Plus Gracie is still posted (RIP)

The Lights on the Sonata can be next to impossible to replace, but these lights will take you

sixty seconds. Unscrew the little Door and there it is! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/00000732.gif)

To do the brake light bulbs - open the trunk, the bulb sockets are covered by a "felt panel", for lack of a better description. The panels each have a little knob that unscrews 4 or 5 turns. Do so and fold the panel down.
The brake bulb is the top most bulb. Remove the bulb socket by twisting it counterclockwise maybe a half a turn. Then remove the bulb by likewise twisting it maybe a half turn counterclockwise.

put a new bulb in the socket - the bulb type is a 2357. Replace both of them - they are high intensity bulbs with a lifetime of only 400 hours. This serves to enrich the local police and also encourages you to buy a new car.

The manuals?? Save them as fire starter material for your fireplace this winter.

I have not done the license plate light yet - you're on your own there.

When you're inserting the new bulb, press it into the socket and try to twist it clockwise to lock it in place. If it locks, you're done. If it doesn't lock, don't force it. Pull it out and rotate it 1/2 turn and try to insert and lock it again.

You know, I am impressed with this young lady. Not only is she brave enough to take on basic car maintenance by herself; she is smart to go on line, find our forum, and ask a very well thought out question that will lead her to showing her father she is a whole lot more capable than he gives her credit! Way to go! Perhaps this is a sign that the follow on generation will be able to fix all that my generation (baby boomer) messed up! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif) Seriously, hats off to you Nancy!

Replaced both of my brake bulbs about 3 weeks ago with bulbs from the local NAPA dealer.

One already went bad (internal open, apparently). This is the Chinese revenge on us. I've had about the same percentage of luck with Chinese plumbing parts.

I replaced both of the NAPA bulbs with Sylvania 2357LL's which I noted were made in either China, Thailand, or Slovakia (take your pick).

Maybe, they'll last a month or two, since they are supposed to be long life bulbs.
