Wire brush any surface rust away, lube the calipers.. hose the old man.. look at pad wear

Canada sounds a lot like the U.S when it comes to this type of malarkey. I personally was quoted

$200 for my 15K Service. All that is needed is an Oil Change & some inspections.

Took it to another Hyundai shop and I was charged $19.95.

Guys, this is total male bovine excreta! His Father-in-laws car only has 5,592 miles on it! The only thing that his brakes need is to have their original plastic wrapping removed because they have never been used! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif)

I say you should spend the $200 and have it done (warranty maintenance documentation is VERY important) BUT before you do it get in touch with your local news station that likes to expose crooked dealers etc. Let them install some mini camera's to tape the entire operation and why it needs to be done. Sit back and enjoy the news broadcast.

my stories - Brake changes on Corolla were at 90k miles due to highway driving, down shifting, easy on brakes. What do you service whee all is working well? and that mileage equals 3-4 years between needing work?
Rusted slide pin from torn caliper boot on Corolla caused pad to wear crooked. Normal inspection when changing/rotating tires showed plenty of life. Reality - only part of pad was actually being used and under emergency braking almost caused accident, luckily there was room to swerve and escape.
Same car- Brake warning light turning on and brake fade under hard braking (when needed rarely). The fluid was so dirty it was blocking light from hitting photo eye in reservoir saying it was low even though it was full. Moisture in system (brake fluid absorbs moisture) heats up and boils causing steam (and air) in lines. Full system flush restored clean fluid and good brakes.

My Sequoia - just changed rear pads for second time (64k on truck) and one caliper bolt was REAL hard to get out and totally corroded upon removal. The boot was torn (see above) and let water and junk into that area. New one ordered will be replaced this weekend, and yes one pad was not wearing evenly but not as bad as teh Corolla.
