Father in law took his car to the dealer today as he had their rustproofing and it was the one year checkup for any re-application appointment. While he was there, service told him that he HAD to have his brakes serviced to maintain his warranty... sounds fishy to me that he would have to have it done and pay 200.00 for the pleasure.. any input???

Oh yeah its time to look for a new dealer.

He's 79 and drives a 2008 Sonata I4. When he bought it I recommended against all the dealer add ons.. but such is life.. my concern is he is getting ripped.. it's my dealer too and f*ckers are gonna hear from me if the brake work is not required to maintain his warranty.

call the 1800 hyundai number infornt of the service douche bag and then once uv proved him to be a liar report it to hyundai/dealer owner.

100% this is fraudulent.

Point 1) Maintenence to be formed does NOT have to be performed by the dealer to remain in warranty. I actually do all my own work (including brakes) and they can not void my warranty for it

Point 2) Brake rotors and pads are WEAR items and are not covered under warranty PERIOD!!!

Point 3) Even if the Brakes WERE covered and this IS required work to maintain the warranty, this would only void the warranty on the brakes and not the entire warranty.

Point 4) $200.00 for a brake job? That is REDICLIOUSLY low, that wouln't even be enough to cover one axle, let alone both.

$200 for a brake job was about right --- in 1980.

Time to find a new dealer.

Can you tell us what work they did? $200 should equate to about 2 hours of labor. I can’t see them providing a visual inspection for that long! How did they justify the cost?

In the 80's & early 90's I was paying $59.95 for a Brake Job. Semi Metallic pads $10 extra.

Rotors should be covered under the 5/60 Warranty.

See, that's the main reason I'm terrified of getting old. Those ganefs will be telling me I need a new engine every time I come for an oil change. And I will say OK.

His manual says 12 months or 24k km's he needs to get the brakes serviced... meaning lube the discs up..... what a pile of bull... he has 9,000 km's on the car

Cars are "rust proofed at the factory".

In reality most of the panels (if not all) in the wheel wells and underneath are hard rubber/plastic and don't require any so called "rust proofing".

You can inspect your brake pads and rotor condition with a penlite (preferably one of the new bright LED jobbies).

If the rotors are not deeply gouged/scored and you have maybe an 1/8" or so of brake pad left, you are ok (I will probably draw fire on the last point) but that is a ball park figure.

Can you post that here? I would think it says 'Inspect', which is different than 'Service'

I don't have his manual... but the brakes are listed as Inspect/Service at 12 months or 24,000 kms.

The point is.. he was told he had to have it done as part of the warranty and as was stated above, brakes are a wear item. Now, that being said, I will get mine done on the Santa Fe once a year as I drive all over Ontario in the winter because my oldest plays rep volleyball and I'm in some pretty snowy and salty areas. As far as the price goes.. my own mechanic told me a service on the four wheels would be about 180.00 Thats to clean and lube the brakes so the cost is in line.

"Inspect" is the key word - need to inspect at the stated interval and only replace if unsafe. In the USA, almost any brake or tire shop will inspect your brakes for FREE or at a minimal cost (look for coupons)- Firestone/Bridgestone, Tires Plus, Brakes Plus, Big O Tires - the list goes on.

yes that price might be in the ballpark. The Sonata does not require any major servicing's until 30,000 miles.

With that said, you get a 5 YR/100 KM 'Comprehensive" Warranty, and we get a 5 YR/60K "Limited" Warranty.

Nope never mentioned new pads or rotors... just a brake "service"

$200 for "service" is all typical dealer BS. My Shell guy checks the brakes every time he rotates my tires, every other oil change. Free of charge, of course, since it takes him about 3 minutes for all 4 wheels.

I know you didn't. A typical Brake Job includes Pads, adjustments, and Rotors, if needed which can be covered, despite

what you might read. What type of cleaning process is done for this charge is what I was wondering?
