Hi,

As a follow-up to my earlier post, if anyone's interested, my i10 Comfort has done about 300 miles. The first fill-up seemed to average 53mpg. Since then I did 207 miles including 30 with 2 passengers, quite a few short trips (<2 miles) with the engine cold, and a 130 mile run from Sudbury (Suffolk) to Brighton (A120/M11/M25/M23) with a lot of luggage and with the a/c on. That was non-stop, generally at around 65mph, except for the Inland Revenue roadblock at the Dartford crossing where everyone was stuck in a 7 mile queue for 30 minutes to pay their £1.50 tax - this has quite probably skewered my mpg figures. Total mileage since last fillup=207 miles, fill up on arrival at Brighton = 19.91 litres, 19.91/4.54 = about 4.4855 gallons (Imperial), so 207/4.4855=47.2mpg (actually, it doesn't, but the 4.855 is a rounded number and I didn't use the rounded number to get the mpg).

19.91 litres took me from full to just above 1/4 full, so I guess a full tank should do me for 320 miles max.

Other points that may or may not be of note: the speedo appears to be about 10% under according to my satnav's reading (70 on the speedo is actually 64, 80 is 73).

The i10 was a dream on the motorway, but with the light accelerator it's hard to keep the speed down. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

you have to add 2 miles for every 100 miles on the i10 as well, so 207 will be 211 miles traveled using the sat nav. sat nav is 100% correct with marker post on motorway.

Slightly off-topic but I have noted that the alloys on my i10 have a substantial powder coating which should protect against the forthcoming salting season............

Oh, is THAT what it is? :-) I did wonder. I was quite impressed the wheels come with locking hubnut thingies. I nearly bought some before I took delivery of the car.

Re 10% under/over; yes, sorry about that. The i10's speedo over-estimates the speed.

That's very interesting. That puts my mpg at 48.11mpg, which is not bad, considering the journeys I did. I think 31 minutes/7 miles stop-start at Dartford, plus quite a lot of cross-country stuff, with 3 people in the car, plus luggage, short journeys, cold starts.. I used to get 60mpg out of my Mk3 diesel non-turbo 1.9 Golf (with BP Ultimate), but that was always 50 mile non-stop journeys up the M23/25 at about 56 mph (I basically followed trucks; sounds boring but the savings add up). I find it's not as easy to maintain a lower speed in the i10 because the accelerator peddle is very light; my foot weighs it down.

can someone tell me if the fuel gauge is non-linear, as i have done around 190 miles and 90 of these were on motorway, the rest round town, yet the fuel gauge is near the quarter mark already. is the final quarter larger than the rest. i hope so based on the above

Don't rely on the fuel gauge in any vehicle - it is an indicator, that's all........

There is lots of talk on the mpg of the i10's, mine is around 50mpg, so not too bad. I found this interesting, part 1and 2

That was an interesting article. Also, FWIW, your mpg is about the same as mine.

I've just done 280 miles from filling up, and the needle went to 1/8th 'full', so I re-filled at the same pump I used last time. The car took 25.72 litres (5.66 imp. gallons). Assuming you multiply the recorded mileage by 1.02 to get the real mileage (as per an earlier post), I did 285.8 miles on 5.66 gals = 50.52 mpg. That was mixed driving (all but 2 runs were >16 miles, country roads and dual carriageways, some with lights/wipers on, some aircon, a bit with a passenger, shopping, satnav on for almost all of it. I also changed up at 2K revs on the flat, kept a healthy distance from the car in front, avoided braking, accelerated smoothly; I used every trick in the book, really. The only 2 things I haven't tried are checking the tyre pressures (doh!) and using something like the BP/Shell premium fuels, which worked wonders in my old diesel Golf.

If the article's correct, I should be able to expect about 55mpg after 3K miles on the clock (currently about 700 miles). I guess if I used the 'super' fuels, I'd get about 60mpg?

Slightly OT, but the i10's manual says the car holds 35litres, which means mine had 9.28 left when I filled up, enough for another 103 miles - that was with the needle reading 1/8th. A total range of slightly under 389 miles. I bet a lot of that would be with the needle on empty and I wouldn't want to run the risk of the fuel pump running on air, though.

When I first picked my 1.1 up from the dealer, I went straight to the petrol station and put 35.74 litres in it. Not bad for a 35 litre tank! My warning light comes on at about 260-280 miles, at which time I can get about 28 litres in it. So theoretically enough left in to do about 70 miles when the warning light comes on.

My wife's i10 Comfort was bought in Jan 2009. I drive it almost as often as she does. We live in rural Wales and for several months I've checked the MPG every fill up and it returns consistently 46 MPG. This isn't too bad considering that the claimed 56MPG overall was always going to be a myth. A very occasional long run pushes us up to 50MPG. In view of the hilly terrain and frequent speed limits I reckon that we should accept the urban consumption as about right. My 1.2 04 Seat gives me exactly 40 MPG against the claimed 6 litres per 100km ie about 46 MPG overall.
As to the car (the i10), it's brilliant for performance and out-accelerates my Seat by a considerable margin but I find my car much more comfortable. I'm 6ft 1in and in the Hyundai with the seat right down and back I need to slope the back rest considerably to get comfortable.

i have just booked my car into the dealers for them to run a series of tests to find out why my fuel consumption is getting worse.

its a shame it took so long for hyundai to get back to my dealer.

here's hoping next friday finds the answers...

Have you tried the obvious and reset your engine's ECU? I assume you have and still have severe problems with your engine`s fuel consumption.

If not then try removing the battery negative lead and press the brake pedal (Hyundai power brake lights even when ignition off) , or remove the ECU 10 amp fuse situated beneath the RH cover underneath the bonnet for a few minutes.

unless the learnt settings are stored in the same non-volatile memory as the factory settings.....

....but i gave it a go. disconected the battery left the doors open to completly drain everything, glad there's no code on the radio.

after reconnecting the battery, the trip miles were still remembered. i would have to guess that the ECU will also have remembered its settings too ???

I had them checked about 3 weeks ago, and they were spot-on! I think i will have them done tomorrow again, and see what they are. A tyre-place near us checks them for free and adjusts if necessary.

I only do very short runs normally, the area i live in is quite hilly, and on the outskirts of the city, so there are a lot of stops and starts, cos of the traffic lights etc.I'm still getting about 10mpg more than i did from my old Corsa, so shouldn't moan too much.

Given the conditions you describe I would say that you are doing alright. The true test would be to take it on a long run on uncrowded dual carriageways at a steady speed and then see what you get....

Thank you, thats made me feel a bit better. I was worrying that it might be something wrong with my car, or my style of driving, though i am very careful not to thrash it, i use the gears correctly, dont speed (well, not much anyway!), and dont carry a lot of luggage about.
I havent used the aircon at all yet, and about half the time, there is only me in the car.

The general advice is to use the airco at least once a month because the working fluid lubricates the seals that can suffer damage and leak. I don't know how sensitive the i10 system is to this problem but it won't cost too much to give it a whirl from time to time.
