Hi,

I recently purchase an '05 XD Elantra and from the word go, whenever the engine is idle it makes a horrible sound, very similar to what my Daewoo which has 97000km on it does when idle. It sounds like a "chicka chicka chicka chicka" with a rattle sort of in the background.

I've checked the oil and it's over full and has no obvious cloudyness. I use regular unleaded fuel and haven't gone over 4k revs since i've owned it. It's only got just under 2000km on it too, so it has in no way been abused.

What could it be? I told the service team when I booked it in for the 1,000k service and they didn't even touch it.

Any ideas?? I feel ripped off in a way. Thanks for your help.

You are covered by the world`s best warranty!..........let the Dealership sort it out.

If they tell you the sound is normal, demand that they demonstrate it on an identical model.

Nick.

screw the service team, and talk to the service manager or the dealership owner.

Well I did tell them and they did nothing about it. I will definately take it back this weekend but I am looking for knowledge to prepare myself when I turn up. I'm not a pro at cars or engines so yeah..... :)

I bought a 2004 XD manual hatch brand spanking new last April, and its always made the same chick chicka chicka idle noise, not the smooth whirr or hum that you'd expect.... but anyway, i reckon its just the characteristic of the variable valve timing/twin cam 16 valve engine, and you shouldn't worry at all.

Keep to the service intervals, check the oil every week or so, and you'll have no probs.

Like someone pointed out, you've got the warranty there which was probably one of the reasons you chose this car, don't be afraid to use it.

By the way, in March, had my roof, bonnet and bootlid repainted under warranty - and last week, a truck threw up a stone which bounced twice accross the roof leaving two big dents - black cars are jinxed i reckon.... :(

Yeah I will take it back to them and tell them to fix it as it sounds horrible. I will be very disapointed if it's "normal" as I certainly didn't notice it in the demonstration car I tried.
