After spending all day on various sites trying to troubleshoot this problem, I am hoping the subscribers to this forum can help me.

I put the key in the ignition (not started) and a chime alarm began going off - similar to having the door ajar. I started the car and it still kept chiming. I noted the door panel light was on, but the door was in fact closed. No other indications that the door wasn't shut properly.

One day, having to use the rear defogger the chiming stopped. Turn off the defogger, it begins again. My Elantra has 73.4k miles and is no longer under warranty unfortunatley. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what is causing this problem.

Im having the same thing happen intermittently in 02 Elantra GT at 43,000 Km's. Im taking it to the shop this week, Ill let you know what happens, sure some electrical issues as the power mirrors stopped working around the same time.

both of you, have the door harness connector (L & R) checked for terminal corrosion.

Thanks Duke! Last week on top of the chiming I shut my car door and the window exploded. I wonder if it isn't all related. In my research on WebTech I also came across that some of the 01s had the old model assembly put in erroneously.

I have an appt tomorrow for them to diagnose the problem...hopefully they figure it out quickly to keep my costs down. I appreciate your insight.

Duke was right! Definitely corrosion in the door. They ended up having to replace the entire harness. The dealership tried to get Hyundai to cover this being the car is only 4 yrs old. Hyundai wouldn't do it because it was over 60k miles. The dealership did however cut me a few breaks in the cost.
