I've been living with a rattle in the rear shelf since ~6k miles. When I took the car in for an early 15k service, I told them about it. It rattles whether the radio is on or not, so it's not speaker vibration. The tech heard the rattle, but did NOTHING to try to fix it. I was told by the service writer that since I was past 12k miles, it may or may not be a warrantied repair! He said that if the part is broken, it would be covered, but if it simply needed an adjustment it would NOT be covered. HOW DO YOU ADJUST A REAR PACKAGE SHELF???

I called Hyundai USA and was told the same thing. The girl at Hyundai said they go by what the dealership says. It was almost like she was saying "wink, wink - have the tech say the piece was broken and we'll pay for it." I called the service manager and told him I'm no longer feeling so good about America's best warranty. I'm supposed to authorize them to tear the car apart not knowing what reason they'll give for the rattle - and who will pay and how much. It's an intermittent rattle, so I've been tolerating it. The service manager says they are very happy to do the work, and they don't care who pays for it, and that since customers buy cars, not Hyundai, they really want me happy and aren't so concerned about Hyundai's happiness in the matter. Service Manager Training 101?

He is going to ask the Hyundai rep to cover this no matter the cause as a gesture of good will. Anyone know where the secret adjusment screw is on the rear package shelf? Absurd.

I eliminated most of the rear shelf rattle by placing a 3” x 3” piece of micro fiber cloth under each of the child restraint hook plastic door assemblies. Lift the plastic and slide the cloth underneath with a small pointed tool so the plastic rests on the cloth instead of the metal.

I also looked in the trunk and located the plastic studs that secure the deck cover to the metal. Then went inside the car and pushed down on these areas to better secure the deck cover.

I used the fiber cloth because it was handy. Some type of foam rubber may be better. The factory should have placed a pad between the hard plastic parts on the cover and the metal.

could you please post some pictures with an arrow where to put that stuff?

there are a lot of plastic screws in the trunk area and I don't really know what you mean with child restrain hook plastic door assemblies? is it the metal thing next to the headrests in the back? the ones with a flip plastic cover? if so, i don't know what could possibly rattle there.

i have the same rattle problem mentioned above and it seems more that the rattle comes from the end of the rear parcel shelf.... when i tap on the rear parcel shelf between the speakers and the glass (before the rear sun shade), it sounds like a drum and i can replicate that rattle. so i would assume, that stuffing foam UNDER the shelf might help.

people in this forum mentioned, that you can access the area under the shelf by folding down the rear sets and removing a cover. not sure how that works. the same people also mentioned that this area is accesible from the trunk which is certainly not the case in my 08 azera. the upper trunk area which is below the rear shelf is full of metall and lots of metal screws. no way that you can reach the rear shelf from there.

in any case... let me know what the dealer did for you. i'm having the same problem and it's quite annoying. i stuffed some light foam between the rear shelf and the C pillars and it helps a bit. i assume that the noise comes from a vibrating rear parcel shelf. Honda accords 07 / 08 have the same problem and those guys fixed it by stuffing foam under the shelf. it seems once the rear parcel shelf isn't able to vibrate anymore the noise is gone....

azeraTEXAS, there seems to be a lot of areas that can develop a rattle.

As describe in my post above, below are photos of what I did to solve most of the rattle problems.

1. The child restraint hook holder.
2. Lid open with inserted yellow cloth to stop rattles.
3. From inside trunk looking at bottom of rear deck. I accessed by simply opening the trunk lid. Arrow pointing to plastic body clip. Note where these are and go to inside of car and push down firmly to fully seat the clips.
4. Another clip under rear deck.

My next step will be to somehow better secue the flip-up lids on the child restraint holders. They also seem to rattle a little. Maybe just close them on a small piece of paper towel or cloth. For now the above seems to make the rattles tolerable.

thanks a lot!

great photos and great description.

coming back to the body clips (the two black ones and the one yellow one) ... do you really recommend to push them down firmly? how deep do they go in and how much pressure is needed? judging from the photos they are supposed (?) to stand out?

sorry.... never-mind the question.

i read your post too quickly...

pressing down on the rear parcel shelf from inside the car should put those clips deeper and more securely (?) into their position.

makes sense. i'll try it when the rattle comes back....

how much deeper do those clips go in when you apply pressure to the rear parcel shelf? how much pressure is needed?
i fear by pressing too hard on the parcel shelf and playing around with the clips, i could make the problem worse. so far the rattling occurs very infrequently. i doesn't rattle for days and then once it rattles for a whole commute to work. very weird. maybe my azera is haunted. Thank you for the kind words azeraTEXAS! It was my first time posting photos.

I am at a lost on the words to use to quantify “firmly”. I just pushed around the areas of the clips to totally seat them. I didn’t go crazy with pressure and figure I can always do it again. I didn’t notice how much deeper the clips went but it was probably only a few thousandths of an inch, maybe .010”, less than the diameter of the thin string on a guitar.

I think the rattle is worse when it is cold. I first noticed it when the temp, here up North, was below 20F. I certainly hope the Azera is not haunted! Thus far my car has been perfect except for this rattle, and the design flaws of the passenger wiper hitting the hood when the wiper arm is raised and the trunk lid dropping water in the trunk when opened during rain. I also find the low knowledge/training level of the service department to be downright scary.

yeah... the service department at my hyundai dealership is a joke. those guys are nice, but they don't know much about the vehicles they are servicing.

"that's supposed to be so..." or "i couldn't find a problem" are the responses you hear all the time.
besides that the quality of work they have done so far on my vehicle was mediocre. forgot to fasten screws in the trunk and so on... unfortunately this hyundai dealership is supposed to be one of the better ones in the DFW area (IMG:style_emoticons/default/innocent.gif)

before the Azera i had a Buick LeSabre. decent vehicle, no major issues ... but nowhere close to the azera. but the GM dealership was great. excellent service and those guys knew the vehicles inside and out. it seems that their training was a few levels better than hyundais training.

i think the hyundai service department is the biggest hurdle for Genesis sales. who's spending $32+ on a "luxury" vehicle when the service department is downright amateurish?
i have friends who drive entry level Lexus' and their service departments are excellent....

UPDATE... The Service writer called me a couple of weeks ago and said Hyundai was going to cover the rattle. I took the car in last week. I was told they put some insulation under the shelf near the sun shade. We drove to Asheville NC from Raleigh for a few days. We drove on the interstate, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and some nasty mountain 2-laners. So far, no recurring rattle. Hyundai did the right thing, and my dealership (Johnson Hyundai in Cary NC) is replacing the front mat SET because of a minor problem with the passenger side mat. I'm satisfied with their service.
