I'm wondering if the fault indicator is just a light or are any "bells" involved. I'm thinking about dedicated snow tires for next year but don't wish to spend the extra money for another four sensors.

No audible warning, just the idiot light. You can thank Ford, Firestone (the flippin' Explorer fiasco) and the feel-good politicians in D.C. for this one.
