Had this exact problem with my 90 excel...changed fuel filter all that stuff. Turned out to be my thermostat:( $14 dollar part and less tahn an hour of labor. Apparently the thermostat tells the fuel injectors whether the car needs more gas (cold) or less gas (warm) if the car warms up and is still getting as much gas as a cold car needs it chokes out. hope this helps.

Hi bob I have a 1992 Carburetta version, is your model EFI? maybe I can suggest some cures if it has a carb, although I will add that I owned a Nissian and I finally located the fault to a timing belt that was jumping after about the same time, the belt and tensioner appeared OK but the belt was coming out of the gear teeth when hot and slipping back into the teeth when cold, so it would run good as and after 20 mins it would miss fire and stall, but each morning when I tested it, it would start fine, my friend had a dreaded Lada that did the same but he would stop and then restart again and he never bothered to look further and my guess it is the same problem.

When ever I do a timing belt now I allway's renew the tensioner which cost about $80 (NZ dollars), Its the sealed bearing that gives out and just slackens the belt for it to ride up, I am not sure if the bearing is easy to change on the Hyundai.

Good luck if its an EFI then it may be something small, you need to diagnose and find the fault code (so may need a garage with the proper test equipment)

Good luck bob they run really really well when they are going, I am pleased with the performance of my Excel.
