Hi all,

Just bought a new CRDi auto (non Highlander) and am very happy :)

Was wondering what tyres changes others have made to their Terracan's? Mine still has the standard Kuhmo 255/65R16's...

Had a look at the BFGoodrich All-Terrains. My brother has them on his Land Rover Discovery and is very happy with them. The problem is that they don't come in a size that matches the standard tyres.

Kev,

I found the standard tyres pretty useless offroad, I changed over to Goodyear Wranglers AT-R 245/70/16's. I had hoped for the larger 265's but they would have rubbed on full lock. These tyres have proven excellent offroad and are extremely quiet onroad plus have increased ground clearance by 6mm, not much but every bit helps.

Hi Kev

I have still got the original BFG macadam's fitted on my terracan diesel (2004) and will shortly replace with the same as my mileage is 98% tarmac and I've covered 35000 miles on original set. I find them a superb on road tyre offering great grip in the wet and dry and very quiet, traction in snow was also very good. The fronts now have 3.5mm left while the backs are still at 6mm, if I used my car a lot more off road I would go for the BFG all terrain.

The best money I have spent on my Terracan was a set of BFG A/T Ko's.
Dimension 255/70 are a PERFECT fit!
Highly recommended as they are excellent for most off roading (but not extreme), and have good on road performance + are relatively silent.

Would like 265/75, but even a lift won't do it as they are simply to big to fit in the arches.

Hi Guys
I have just brought a new Crdi and want to change the tyres.
The 255/70 are a great fit but 30 mm larger than standard so what do you do with the spare?
The new size wont fit in the spare tyre hole underneath so if you get a flat then what?
Please let me know what you have done.

I see your point about the spare... I haven't tried to fit the larger tires in the spare space yet. I suppose that if you have a flat, driving a short distance, a standard 255/65 would be OK.
My TC was delivered with 15" steel rims, so when I upgraded to 16" Cobras, I couldn't affort an extra spare rim. One day though, I will run into some cheap 16" on sale :P

I hope to go on a longer off road trip soon, and for this I would bring 2 spares, so one would have to be carried on the roof.

By the way: Do any of you guys know of a decent roof rack for a Terracan. The standard "max 34 kg evenly distributed" bars which are standard will have to go!

Hi Dane,

Here's Norway calling (but I'll write in English for the benefit of all).

A bit off topic but I'll comment on the roof rack you wondered about: I once saw a Terracan on the street with other racks than the originals. When I talked to the owner he told me they were standard Thule racks, they fit straight in but he couldn't remove the original bars so he just left them there as well. It looked a bit weird but it worked.
What I don't know is whether the designation "max. 34 kgs evenly distributed" refers to the crossbars only or the rails on the roof. In my registration card it says max. 100 kgs so I'm none the wiser.
On the German Hyundai site www.hyundai4wd.com I saw a description of how to remove the original crossbars: You have to remove the whole rail assembly from the roof and slide them out, looked like a lot of work.

Regarding the tyres, I have been thinking about getting BFG ATs too, I had them on a Toyota HiLux once. They were great both summer and winter and surprisingly low on the noise considering the coarse thread. Is 255/70 within acceptable limits? I'm thinking about the 3% deviation from standard that I think is allowed, the 70 profile makes them a little bit higher (which is good).

Hi Terranor,

Thanks for that info on Thule. Would be nice to see how it is fitted, but this must be retrievable from Thule. I had the standard bars removed and refitted by the dealer as there was a problem with one of them, and this involved drilling out rivets and two people having to lift the wobbly contruction off the roof. And I suppose that there are some pretty ugly holes left in the roof.

I am not sure about the 34kgs. vs. 100 kgs., but anyway the bars seem very unstable and I wouldn't carry anything besides my toothbrush and a clean set of underwear on these. I looks like if you put even very little weight on them, an emergency stop could cause the plactic to break.

I would like to carry a couple of spare tires and jerry cans or a roof tent... so Thule it is :D

Tires: BFG AT 255/70 fit nicely. In DK 5% size increase is OK, so no problem. There is no rubbing under normal conditions, eventhough during this winter, there were times where the 5 cm. snow on the tires caused rubbing in the front inner arches (just the snow rubbing against the plastic, no damage).

I staked a tyre in the desert two weeks after getting my Terracan.The Kumho's have paper thin sidewalls. Replaced it with a Toyo of the same size. I was considering Coopers but the price was a bit steep. Also had Toyos on my Jeep Cherooke and I was impressed with the handling change and the good wear characteristics.

I would recommend to others considering purchasing a Terracan and considering taking it off sealed roads to try and negotiate for a better tyre. I've just staked the second tyre on a trip through Ngarkat National Park! Two tyres in 6000 kms.

The first tyre went at normal road pressure on a gibber strewn track. This latest tyre went at 18 psi on a very tame sandy track. Bad driving - no, I was doodling along in both cases. Bad tyres - yes, both were staked in same place - the tyre's shoulder. It is very thin rubber here. I was able to repair the tyre at the scene with a plug, only so if another tyre went I would not be stranded. That tyre hits the bin as soon as!

The replacement tyre is your call. There’s plenty of comment on this and other forums about which brand and size to get. Just see if you can get a change by the dealer at purchase time…”it’ll save you”.

And...its not the cost that irritates me...its the frustration of loosing half an hour's fun driving my Terracan!

By the way for those who travel it - The SA-Vic Border Track is still closed; or so the signs say. I saw plenty of tracks headed off towards the track. Evidently locals say the track probably wont be openned until a bit more rain has fallen in the area.

Hi i have the petrol terracan and have fitted 255/70/R16 Copper ST tyres. Recently returned from a trip through our Simpson Desert. Had no problems with the tyres, cant say the same for the suspension. have upgraded this to Koni Shockers/Dampers and King springs in the rear. this also gave a 50mm rear lift.

I have done the Kings coils in the rear also. What a difference. Almost like a different car on the open road. I would like to do the Koni's soon also.

As for the discussion about the roof/cross racks, I threw caution to the wind on my last trip and bolted my old roof rack to the cross bars. I loaded it up with I think about 50 or 60Kgs. I have photo's - it wasn't a small load. I had no problem over 6 thousand kms. Mind you I hate roof racks altogether anyway. I just used it because I had no other option. Eventually I wanto get a nice little trailer that sits neatly behind the car for my gear.

Hey Yogi Bear,

If you are going to replace your shocks i woulod recomend the TJM XGS front and rear. with Koni i poped both front seals on corrigations, apparently they find the heat generated difficult to cope with. credit to Koni though they replaced them free of charge. i had a set of the XGS fitted in Birdsville and no further problems.

to cope with the load of the roofracks i'm about to have a set of Polyair Springs fitted to compliment the Kings. this should allow for an additional load weight of 450kgs in the back without destroying the ride height. i'm dubious of this claim and will post a note when i get them and give them a workout when i go to Robe SA in February.

hi guys from lovely saudi arabia. i have a 2001 2.5 diesel. I just changed my standard hankooks at 60,000 klms. i went for hankooks again but a higher aspect ratio. I went for hankook dynamic RA03 275/70/16. no problem with fouling on full lock. I left the spare as it still has about 15,000 klms of tread.

i am still patiently waiting for saudi hyundai to join the real world and get the 2.9 crdi. For some reason, they won't sell them here. I have been annoying the hyundai saudi dealer for about 10 months now. So i thought i'd go for the bigger aspect ratio to give me an extra 10klm on the 120 kph that i cruise on now. I am very happy with the results. The engine pushes the bigger tyres no problem and i can happily sit on 130kph all day (and nite).

All I need now to put a bigger smile on my dial is for the 2.9 to come to saudi. one day, maybe. you would think they would get the diesel here. diesel here costs about 16 australia cents a litre and petrol is about 35 cents.

Oh, BTW, i changed to koni gas adjustables shocks about 12 months ago and no problem with them so far (touch wood)

I have fitted mine with Toyo Opat's avaikabke in 255/65/16, a little over $200.00 when purchased. a little nousier than original but going well at 45,000ks.
I belive you would have to look at 245/70/16 in B F Goodrich to stay legal, I have used them on a previous vehicle for a number of outback trips & found them to be an excellent tyre.
