I have a 2006 56 plate terracan with 15,000 miles on the clock it has been fine so far apart from when i put it into 4WD

I put it into 4WD when stationary but it doess not engauge so you have to drive forward to engauge it but it engauges with a clunk and then it's fine is this normal?

Thanx

Hi 2fast. The 4wd i think does need rolling wheels to engage as its some sort of vacuum system i believe. Try and get in the habit of engaging it just before you need it! The clunk i am not so sure about. mine sometimes makes a noise when engaging but i wouldnt describe it as a clunk. If you are worried , take it to a dealer, there is plenty of warrany left! I am in wales too (south) Have you had any trouble with the snow? My tc sailed through about a foot of snow today on my way to forestry land to walk the dog. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Enjoy the tcan they are great vehicles.

Hi Guys, I'm also from the South? South Africa. I do extreme 4x4ring and have had extensive mods done to my Can. To date my vacuum pipes have not given me problems. If your vehicle has tension on any wheel the engageing may make a noise but in general it is fairly quite. By rights it should engage standing still as well as 4H of up to 80KPH. Maybe with the snow and cold your lubrication is not correct. Maybe clarify this with the dealers. PS it 37deg is Cape Town today. Have fun

2 fast 4 u all, Hi from Costa Rica, my '04 2.5 turbo diesel 5 speed manual does the same thing. I believe the gear changing is done by an electric motor. It seems to shift quickly and easily from 2 high to 4 high, but takes forever from 4 high to 4 low, and if the car is moving at all when the shift finally takes place, it does so with a clunk going in. I don't use my 4 high or 4 low very much, so maybe the shifting mechanisms are varnished up or something. Perhaps with an oil change or an additive to counteract the varnishing, if that is the problem, will resolve the slowness. Just a thought. Jeff.
