I thought I would post this HOWTO on changing the oil in a Vera Cruz. I was unable to find this info online with images
and thought it would be helpful to the community.

The Subject:

Our 2008 Limited Vera Cruz with 4034 Miles.

(IMG:http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk228/seanp1031/VeraCruz/DSCN2788.jpg)
(IMG:http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk228/seanp1031/VeraCruz/Oil%20Change/DSCN3015.jpg)

Here's what you'll need to change the oil:

Oil Filter with two o-rings ( Purolator Model L35610)
6+ quarts of Oil ( I used Fully Synthetic 10w30 Mobil 1)
10mm socket(for the engine cover bolts)
17mm socket(for the oil drain plug)
Drain Pan
Funnel

(IMG:http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk228/seanp1031/VeraCruz/Oil%20Change/DSCN3022.jpg)

1. Pop the hood and use the 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the 6 engine cover bolts. Remove the engine cover and set it aside.

(IMG:http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk228/seanp1031/VeraCruz/Oil%20Change/DSCN3017-1.jpg)

2. Dust off the top of the engine and surrounding areas. I used an old clean rag because I didn't feel like busting out the air compressor that
is stored in my shed. This should lessen the chance of dirt or debris entering the engine via the oil fill cap or the filter housing.

3. Locate the filter housing. It is on the right side of the engine as you are facing the engine bay.

(IMG:http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk228/seanp1031/VeraCruz/Oil%20Change/DSCN3018-1.jpg)

4. Using your strong hand, twist the cap on the filter counter-clockwise to remove. There will be some residual oil on the cap and insert.
I had a plastic container ready to place the filter cap into so as not to drip on the engine. Set this to the side for the moment.

(IMG:http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk228/seanp1031/VeraCruz/Oil%20Change/DSCN3023.jpg)

5. Losen the oil fill cap near the front of the engine. This will reduce the vaccuum and let the oil drain more freely.

6. Slide the oil drain pain under the front of the vehicle and grab your 17mm socket and ratchet and slide under the front of the vehicle.
The drain plug is on the right rear bottom side of the engine and is black in color. Remove it and let the oil drain.

(IMG:http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk228/seanp1031/VeraCruz/Oil%20Change/DSCN3021-1.jpg)

7. While that is ocurring, break out the new filter and o-rings. Replace the o-rings on the filter cap. There is a small and a large o-ring.

(IMG:http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk228/seanp1031/VeraCruz/Oil%20Change/DSCN3025.jpg)
(IMG:http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk228/seanp1031/VeraCruz/Oil%20Change/DSCN3026-1.jpg)

7. Insert the new filter into the housing making sure that it seats down all the way.

(IMG:http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk228/seanp1031/VeraCruz/Oil%20Change/DSCN3027.jpg)

8. Replace the filter cap and tighten firmly.

9. Check the oil drain pan. If the oil has drained to your liking, replace the drain plug and tighten to 32.5 Ft Lbs.

(IMG:http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk228/seanp1031/VeraCruz/Oil%20Change/DSCN3029.jpg)

10. Hold a funnel over the oil fill hole and gracefully pour oil. I put in 5 quarts and the dipstick barely registered "low".
I ran the engine for a minute or so and then checked the dipstick again. It stil registered "low". I added another quart
which brought it to the "full" mark.

11. Replace the engine cover and be sure to tighten all 6 bolts.

Please let me know what you think of my HOWTO.

Great post Kanuck!!! Top notch!!! Thanks for the effort and time. Photos were awsome!!!

I have a little info to add.... Hyundai made a filter housing change late in the year for the 2008 Veracruz. I bought the same filter as you did. When I got home it did not fit. It was too long. I went up to the Hyundai dealership. They tried to give me a Hyundai filter that was the same size. I advised the parts guy that the filter was too big. He put my VIN in the computer and it came up with a different filter. He did some checking and advised that Hyundai made a filter change in late 2008. The filter housing cap now has a 1 inch hex "nut" on the top to easily remove with a normal wrench. I will take a few photos and post.

Again, great post!!!!

I wonder if the new filter housing cap will fit my VC? While I did not have any issues removing mine, A hex nut to throw a wrench on would certainly make it easier to remove. Thanks for the kudos and for your input.

Does anyone happen to have a make or part # for this new filter? I had done some research before purchasing my 2008 Veracruz last week, but had missed the differences in the oil filter cap. Mine does indeed have the hex nut on top as well.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, as I have always been a diy when it comes to regular maintenance.

Thanks!

James

One more item to add. I have a late model 2008 Vera Cruz with the hex cap filter. It takes a 1-1/16" socket to remove the cap. I just completed the 2nd oil change and it is much easier to remove the cap with the socket than an oil filter wrench.

Great post on the how to do an oil chnage on the vera cruz. Wish I'd found this formun before. Went to do an oil change and found that the filter was too big. Did any one find a type or number for the newer oil filter? Would appreciate the info if it is available, for now just left the old filter in place.

Thanks. That filter is the one I bought. It is too big. They did a change in 2008 and I'm trying to find out what the replacement was.

Which dimension is too big?

They must have made a change in late 2008 because I drive an 08 and it fits my vehicle. Please post what you find out about the filter size and brand part #.

Thanks!

There are two filters for the 2008 model. I have the smaller filter in mine.....it has a cutoff by manufacturer date of the vehicle. If you go to any NAPA store they will be able to help you out....

Here is a picture of the two different sizes. The larger one is the older style that my '07 VC uses. My '06 Sedona EX's 3.8L also uses the same filter.

The smaller one is the newer style. Maybe Hyundai made the switch at the same time they redesigned the filter cap?

There is also another part number 26320 3C300, which as far as I can tell looks the same as the shorter one. But I don't know for sure.

My Veracruz also uses the "shorter" filter, the short is 4.19" and the Purolator number is L25848, the longer one is 5.12" and the Purolator # is the same as in the original post, L35610 (the same as my 07 Kia Sorento w/3.8L motor uses)

I was a little upset that I couldn't get the same filter for both, but oh well....

Most car parts stores only carry the L35610, I'm about to trek out now to find one - 2 nd oil change is due - the first was included in the deal to buy the car.

I'll post more if I can find a different manufacturer's number

Technically, it's also recommended that you replace the gasket (metal ring/washer) on the oil drain plug each time you change the oil. I recently traded in my 2007 on a 2010 and did all the oil changes on the 2007 myself. When I traded it in, the dealership asked me if I also replaced the drain plug gasket with each oil change (which I didn't). I picked up a bunch of replacements from the parts department for the 2010. They were about a $1 a piece. I haven't done an oil change on the 2010 yet.
