Firstly, thanks for your time - I am new to these forums. I have recently bought a 1996 Hyundai Excel Sprint (Australia) and it's GREAT. I do have a question though. When starting, especially when engine is cold, there is a noise/rattle for about 15 seconds coming from the motor.

It's under warranty and the mechanic says that's a normal noise and even the new ones will make it.

I've only got a week left on warranty and just wanted to find out if other cars really do make this noise? it's not aggressively loud, but definitely there; it doesn't sound like the noise previous cars I've had make when the oil is being pumped after it's all settled when engine is cold.

Any thoughts/opinions etc gratefully received if anyone has the time/inclination. Thank you :)

Not that I have the grounds to say this, I think it's nothing... the mechanic is right
From what I hear hyundai's do make the odd sound here and there but it's always a good idea to investigate

this question has come up many times before, this rattle/tapping sound from cold is due to the hydrolic tappets and it is normal provided the noise dissapears after 10 seconds or so

My old Excel used to make a tractor hum then a rattle for fifteen minutes I sold my 1996-7 Accent because it was a lemon five years ago, from what I'm told the car was sold off at Auction interstate, who knows you may have my old car. What colour is it, does it have a Phillips Cd stereo, no central locking but an alarm , Is it blue ???? ( let me know and I can tell you what is exactly wrong with it, that's if it was the one I got rid of.
