Hi all, I am experiencing an intermitant problem on my 2005 crd manual. It will start and instead of idling at approx 800 rpm it only gets to about 500rpm. If you swich off and restart it then will perform normally. Its been back to the dealer for a diagnostic check but it showed no fault codes. Its been ok since the trip to the dealer about two weeks ago, but has now flared up again. Its due back in the dealer on monday, but has anyone else experienced this, and if so what was the fix? The dealer will probably say no fault codes again and do nothing, so anyone got any pointers? cheers (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) When driving the car performs normally. When it is idling at the lower level, the throttle shows no response.

possible coolant temp. sensor but your dealer should be able to pin point this, have you left the vehicle with the dealer overnight so that they can experience the fault first hand in the morning when its cold?

Thanks montego. The problem isnt specifically when the engine is cold. It did it 5 times on wednesday (throuhout the day) but has been fine since, including this morning, when it was very cold. I am a bit worried as i have heard about problems with the fuel pumps and hope it isnt the start of something serious. The car drives normally and starts normally for most of the time, and no warning lights have come on, so i am hoping its not anything to do with the fuel pump. The coolant temp reading seems fine (it stays at just under half on the gauge once warm). Anybody got any other ideas? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Your dealer should take some live data readings and send them to Hyundai Technical. Its not just a case of code reading these days.

Well, been back to dealer today and they still cant find anything wrong and cant give any explanation. No fault codes, checked fuel filter but everything fine. So i am completely stumped! They said they will contact the dealer network to see if there has been anything similar reported. Fingers crossed!!

I had an intermitent idle problem with mine as well (2005 CRDi manual), only thing was that it would go from 800rpm up to 1000 rpm for no apparent reason. The problem then became constant, but if you just touched to brake pedal so the brake lights came on the idle would drop back down to 800rpm.

The final solution was to replace a faulty knock sensor. Once again no fault codes showed up, but one other vehicle here in Oz had had a similar problem and it was found on the Hyundai dealers forum site.

My knock sensor may have failed in full advance and yours might have failed in fully retarded (just a guess).

Porky, are you near Cardigan? I have some friends near there whom I have not seen since '97, they farm sheep. Jeff, in Costa Rica. Cheers.

Hey porky, you may know these people because they have won contests for their sheep, at things like spring fairs etc., I believe. Their first names are Eirwyn and Bessie. jeff.island@gmail.com

I met them when I drove tour bus in the Canadian Rockies in 1996 and visited them at their home in the spring of 1997. I found your area to be beautiful and would enjoy traveling there again. Maybe one day........

Cheers, Jeff.

Well, 5 months after the original problem, my local dealer has finally been able to diagnose a dodgy fuel pump (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif) after the problem recently flared up again. It appears that it was not holding pressure (so the fitter tells me). It is booked in in a fortnight for a replacement pump. Am i right in assuming that the whole fuel system needs replacing/flushing? Any help /advice would be great.

There was a survey done by the Terracan forum in Oz and out of 49 respondants 5 had suffered a pump failure. There seems no real trend to the failure other than they may occur a short time after the fuel filter is replaced if the fuel system is not primed properly and the pump operates dry for a short period of time.

I think all fuel pump failures have also required the entire fuel system to be replace due to metal from the failing pump going through the injectors and fuel lines.

You can check this subject on the Oz forum at

Thanks BJL. I have seen the info in oz and find it a great site. However, i am beginning to think that my problems are not connected to the fuel pump. The car drives perfectly, with no loss of power, or warning lights, the only time i have trouble is on start up. This is very sporadic and has no relationship to temp or fuel levels etc. I am no mechanic, but if the fuel pump was dodgy wouldnt i be experiencing probs all the time, and cetainly when driving? I think it may be a sensor/electrical problem. The dealer tested the fuel system after it failed to start in their workshop and i was told the fuel system was losing pressure. What would cause this? Is it only the fuel pump? They did not mention any fault codes, so are they just guessing? Thanks for any help anyone can give.

The plot thickens. The 'can failed to start again today, but this time the glow plug indicator did not illuminate!!! Left it for 5 minutes and the car started perfectly! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) This is looking more and more like an electrical gremlin to me. The trouble is unless the fault shows up in dealer they cant diagnose any faults! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rant2.gif) I would be grateful for any help!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/57.gif)

Update! Had the 'can back from dealers today. The problem was a faulty rail pressure sensor. This involved changing the whole common rail and fuel pipes. It eventually showed up as a fault code. I hope this helps anyone with a similar problem! Its great to have the beast back after 4 days with a 3 door suzuki swift (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif) Thanks to everyone who helped (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif)
